My Mikado woes..

by alacious » Feb 7th, '06, 13:25

Hello!

Just recently, I dropped the glass strainer for my Mikado on my countertop and cracked it badly :(

I was simply going to purchase a new glass strainer, but now I am wondering.. is it possible to upgrade to the gold one? If the gold strainer fits in my teapot, where is it possible to buy one?

Or do I have to buy a whole new setup?

Thanks :)

Mike

Mike,

The Mikado 42oz is the same as the Gold Mikado with the exception of the filter. If you can find someone who sells the filter by itself, I'd recommend that. If not, we have plenty of Mikado Golds left :)

Both SpecialTeas and Culinary Teas sell Mikado teapots - you may want to see if they sell infusers. I know SpecialTeas sells some Jenaer pieces separately.

Awesome, thank you!

I will look for a gold filter, but if not.. I'll probably just end up buying a whole new set :)

Thanks again

I would recommend buying a new set, butterfingers (hehe.) You can never have enough Jenaer ware and the supply will soon dry up.
Personally, I never use the glass infusers because they seem to interfere with the circulation of fresh water to the tea leaves during the infusion and they can be a pain to clean. I usually use the biggest steel mesh ball infuser that will fit, or a Finium style infuser basket like this :

I think that is in fact made by Finium and will work well in the 1.2 liter Mikado.

The Mikado Gold is well worth buying. In fact, I have an extra one in storage just in case anything bad happens to mine!

Another option would be to purchase a teapot sized Swiss Gold filter. The Mikado Gold uses a Swiss Gold filter.

You can purchase a large Swiss Gold Filter (for teapots 4 cups and larger) at Tea Source

Yay for losing your internet connection for a month.

I take it these filters won't fit in the smaller Mikado? I only have the 21oz teapot :(
