Atm I'm looking for some cheap matcha tea ware to start my matcha experience. I'm looking at an ebay item that seems small when compared to the chawans on
hibiki-an. The ebay seller says the dimensions are Diameter 3 1/2" Height 2 1/2".
I was hoping to get some insight into the importance of chawan size for making matcha. I imagine it would get a bit messy if your chawan was too small or maybe it would be difficult to whisk the matcha to the desired consistency.
Atm there is this
item on sale at rishi and has about the same dimensions, Diameter 3.38"
Height 2.88" (not including lid), as the ebay chawan in the above paragraph. I was wondering if it would be doable to use this as a matcha bowl for a bit till I can save up for a nice chawan.

Heads up: you could get an actual chawan over at
the Japanese Green Tea Shop for less than what Rishi's charging for the koryo. They look nice enough to me! They also do a
3-piece matcha starter kit including chawan, whisk, and scoop. I only mention them because they're having a 10% off sale right now.

Atm the cup from rishi is $13 and I kind of want to use it at work once I get a nice chawan for my collection.

$13 for the Koryo is a good price, that's about 50% off. I have had a few of them and they are pretty nice. However, I would not try to make matcha in one of them. While you probably could make matcha in something that small, it is harder and I don't think it will come out as well.

It was glazed, so I used it for just about everything. Black, white, green, puerh, and oolong. The koryo was my intermediate pot between english style pots and tokoname kyusu. I gave away the two koryo i had to other friends who were into tea once I started getting into Japanese tea ware.
I do think the koryo style is great for that beginner/intermediate tea drinker. It has its own aesthetic appeal, its glazed so its versatile, and it get's people used to brewing tea in smaller (8-10 oz) amounts.

the cup you have pictured above isn't intended to be a chawan. it's demensions make me think it's intended to be a guinomi (sake cup), albeit a fairly large one. many guinomi are around 2in X 3in. i wouldn't use it as a chawan.

Ya, I was pretty skeptical about it too and so I had to make a post. I've decided not to buy it and invest some where else.
