Computer problems

by olivierco » Jan 12th, '09, 16:43

My five-year old computer is beginning to show some problems so I might suddenly be unable to have internet access.

You may want to back up your teawares too, Olivier. I offer the Chamekke backup service at extremely reasonable rates. Simply send me your chawan-s, kyuusu-s, chataku-s, and other fine wares, and I will keep them safe indefinitely... :D

Seriously though, I hope you resolve your computer problems. Salsero's advice is good: backing up the computer is a pain, but data loss is worse.

Well I am still able to use it.
I usually back up one every month or so. I made yesterday night a complete back up. I now just have to save all new files until I buy a new computer. Maybe next week if I can find some time.

Just get an online backup program Mozy is good; you get 2GB free, and I believe they have a Mac version. You set what you want to back up and it does it automatically. By default it backs up changed data (in the data you select) when the computer is idle, but I set it to do it at a certain time. So if there's a problem you've pretty much always got a backup and the worst case scenario is that it takes a while to download what you need.

I got my new computer today. So far no problem but I still have many data to transfer and some programs to install.

I'm also battling computer problems today. (I'm using hubby's laptop at the moment.)

Got infected with the v*rtu __ m0nd3 virus, (deliberate misspell, no need to beetlejuice the damn thing,) and I'm having all kinds of issues. Very pernicious malware. I've done ALL the usual stuff, but it has disabled my auto updates for both MS and symantec. I've disabled system restore and am cleaning the system now with several legit tools, so we'll see if it works. I do NOT want to have to reinstall windows, and I have 5gig of music and image files that have not been transferred/backed up.

My Thunderbird Inbox is quarantined and I can't get it out. Somewhere, somehow, I must have clicked on a bad link. Supposedly it piggy-backed in on some spyware, set my cookies to "accept all" and then marched right in. My symantec grabbed the spyware virus, but couldn't get the other one that is causing all the problems.

*tearing hair out*

Well good luck with your virus.

I am currently removing all the preinstalled programs I didn't want from my new computer and also preparing to transfer my music files: about 80Giga, all legal.

Thanks, I think I'll need all the help I can get. Windows did one those "Ack something bad! Abort!Abort!" shutdowns while in the middle of the Microsoft live scan. The scan had already picked up several issues, but I don't think anything was done with them yet.

I do NOT know what is going on. If I have to do a total wipe and reinstall windows, I'm going to bawl like a baby.
