looking for thermos bottle

by silverneedles » Jan 19th, '09, 23:56

gave up on these travel mug things wannabe thermos plastic things what dont remain hot for 10 minutes in 0 degree car in the morning, and that supposedly spill proof, fit in car cup holders, and have a flap or a switch to open a "hole" to drink thru
...
any good "real" thermos (keep temp of liquid for 15 minutes) type bottle with a cap to twist off and reveal a real hole i can drink thru ?

im looking at these kleen kanteen, but if you know any good ones even at Target/Costco/Walmart/TJMaxx etc

but the kleen kanteen are just metal "limited insulating properties" ...

Look for something that is double walled.....I have one that is made of plastic and it does a pretty good job at keeping things cold...I have yet to use it to transport hot liquids so I cannot comment as to its heat retention properties, but, I have used those metal water bottles and put hot liquids in them and had them last for several hours and be very hot BUT I bought a neoprene insulator for mine. So, that being said, I think that you could find a double walled travel thermos and then get a neoprene insulator and the liquid would remain piping hot for a while.

I spent a couple weeks looking for a way to travel with my tea. i ended up buying this one: http://shopthermos.com/detail/TMS+JML350P

It keeps my tea quite hot for hours... sometimes too hot. I have found myself waiting for a half hour for my tea to cool down to a drinkable temperature. So when using this thermos i have to leave of the lid off after i brew my tea. The infuser also works quite well.

Imagegot/returned a Thermos bottle at Target 23$+tax (in pack with a leaky mug)
1L = lots of tea.
fits the largest cupholder in my car (3.3in wide), doesnt fall over during sudden braking.
big mouth hole
...
but ended up returning it:
- quite challenging to hold and bring to face a 1L thermos with hot liquid inside, while driving on twisty neurotic "highways" of NYC. found i'd only use it while stopping or straight clear roads.
- big drinking hole = when drinking from it - the hot vapors were uncomfortable to my facial & nose area. (the Zojirushi tuff sports has a tiny drinking hole that opens with a button, but it doesnt fit in my car ..tho 27$ @ H-mart)

took measurments of heat retention:

1. start liquid temp = 61.5C, duration 8.25h, end temp = 52.9C
avg temp drop -1.1C/hour
(mostly in 22C room, 3h in 6C car)

2. start liquid temp = 94C (prewarmed thermos), duration 25h, endtemp=57.2C
avg temp drop -1.4C/hour
(room temp 21C)
