Jing vs. Dragon Tea House Da Hong Pao?
Has anyone had both DHP's from these two vendors (the basic versions, not the high brow ones)? The price is in the same range, and I just finished the DHP from Jing and am looking at maybe trying DTH to compare. Jing's was great, but thought I might try something comparable in the 'everyday' price range.

I haven't had much personal experience with them, and the experiences I have had have been so-so to mixed, but Teacuppa gets pretty good reviews from some.
Hou De has a new batch of one; I thought the 2007 one was pretty good. Price is medium-ish - $160/lb or so. I think they sold all of what they added to the site today, but they'll probably get more in.
Given the premium you pay for the name, and the fact that a lot of DHP is reported to be a blend anyway (or may not be DHP at all), I'd say you might want to experiment with some other medium / high fired yancha that are less famous or less overpriced and see if you like those. You still won't know for sure what you're getting, but I'd say there's a better bet that you're getting what a vendor is claiming. Beidou #1 is sometimes suggested as a variety that is descended from the Da Hong Pao line, and can often be had for a reasonable price. In fact, while most likely not from the "scenic area", the Bei Dou #1 from Mr Li's factory (mentioned here http://amateursdethechinois.blogspot.co ... oct-2.html) is very nice in my opinion, and the price ($17 US or less for 500g) is a fraction of what a lot of vendors would charge even over there.

YSLLC's DHP is pretty good for the price, ABx turned me on to it. Order the 250g and get a cool bag.
I have tried both DTH and YSLLC's Da Hong Pao. I found them to be very similar.
I'd have to do a back-to-back tasting to be able to say for sure, but I remember having a couple brew sessions with one, and then a few weeks trying the other, and having "the exact same experience" as far as memory allowed....
Haven't tried the Jing one, though...

I have tried DTH DHP and it was very good for the price and in some cases is equal or surpasses even some of the more expensive stuff I have tried
Don't always believe what you think!

I am falling in love with the DHP from YSLLC, its quite tasty and for the price you can't beat it. I only picked up 100g, but Ill be getting the 250g bag this time without a doubt.tenuki wrote:YSLLC's DHP is pretty good for the price, ABx turned me on to it. Order the 250g and get a cool bag.
YSLLC is 8.8¢ vs. DTH 13¢ / gm - that is a great deal for 250gm, I'll give it a shot, thanks for the suggestions all. Jing's comes to 11¢ / gm for comparison ($11/100g iirc).
PS - as a side note, any other yan cha (shui xian or ... coal roasted tky is great too) I should order from YSLLC in this vein? The bei dou wyardley suggested sounds cheap as all get out.
