I've seen Bebo used as a business tool before. A colleague was off sick and the "business tool" was used to provide photographic evidence that he had not in fact spent the entire time curled up on his bed feeling awful and was actually pictured in rather high spirits only a few hours before the start of his shift.

The internet can be a great thing, but she has a mean side as well...Proinsias wrote:I've seen Bebo used as a business tool before. I like to joke about Facebook, but to be fair, it does have its uses. My company is tech-related and maintains a big Facebook presence (our own network, plus a number of groups/pages). Our customers are people who spend a lot of time online, so it makes business sense for us to be there as well. Within the company, it's a handy tool because it's an international company and things tend to be impersonal... we do everything via email/FTP transfer and rarely meet people face-to-face. I've worked here for 14 years and never had a clue what certain people looked like until I got on Facebook. I'm sure I have co-workers who were similarly surprised... "oh, so that's who that Erika chick is..."

My job doesn't use facebook, though many of the office people now have facebook and are wanting to make groups and things... I see no point really, for us at least.
I do use it to keep up with people that I meet, as well as just using "regular, old-fashioned" e-mail. Take for instance this conference I went to this summer, added about 75 people from that alone. If it wasn't for facebook, I probably wouldn't keep up with as many of them as I do.

The thing that really makes facebook work is that a LOT of people use it. I have reconnected with so many people from high school, even grade school, old co-workers, etc. It makes life easier to be able to see all your connections in one place, and a lot of my friends use it pretty regularly, so I can see pictures of what they're doing, read their notes, etc.
I agree Andy - When I signed up I reconnected with all my old perfume
board buddies, and my friends from school, as well as family and tea chatters.
It's nice to have everyone in one place.
