Tony,
I received one of these cakes for Christmas and I have really enjoyed it. It is made of good material, Bulang, it reminds me of Ban Zhang as it is quite powerful. The cost is only $9 for a cake so it is very cheap. It reminds me of a Menghai Dayi cake. It was just soo inexpensive I couldn't pass it up. I will give a in depth review latter this week.

Lao BanZhang is part of Bulang Mountain. So, in a way it should remind you of Bulang because well, it is Bulang. Many of th so called LBZ are really mao cha picked around the LBZ area and not from Lao Banzhang village. To tell you the truth, it would be difficult for me to compare the two since I "probably" have never tasted unadulterated LBZ although it read LBZ on the wrapper. What LBZ have you tasted? And would you share some?

Thanks for the clear up there hop. I had a tasting of the 2007 Mengku Banzhang brick. I find it fairly similar to my cakes however I only had it once and it was months ago.hop_goblin wrote:shogun89 wrote:Tony,

Patience not being one of my virtues, I cracked open the '06 CNNP 5961 red label.
It's a pretty looking bing, despite the apparent surfeit of twigs in the mix. Nice and flat, with no dimple. Tight compression, but the flat edge makes it easy to prise apart solid chunks.
After that, well...........
Not much going on here. Needs a lot of leaf and time to show anything, and when it does it's still pretty flat, lacking anything resembling "oomph". Not smoky and no odd flavors, but not many good ones either. Barely detectable huigan, and as for energy, chaqi's not in love.
This one is a shame- I wanted to like it, but it didn't reciprocate. Not one for the long haul, and fairly uselss for the short term, as well. Pass on this one.
