My guess would be kuro because it's the most famous of all chawans from what I have seen.
Rikyu selected black and red for the glaze to go with matcha.
Here is a picture of the famous akaraku Yugure chawan attributed to Chojiro (16th century)

Regarding which was better... Ippodo sample or my O-Cha Kiri No Mori,
Which Ippodo matcha did you taste?
Ermmmm I dunno... just said Ippodo Matcha.... maybe my benefactor will chime in with details?
***This organic blend is earthy & spicy, with a fragrant aroma & smooth flavor to captivate the senses. Naturally sweetened in the Kentucky sunshine & infused with natural energy. Equally delicious when served piping hot or crisply chilled.***

Mmmm that's nice. Although it makes me wonder, is it just me or have chawans gotten a lot wider?

Check out hibiki-an is selling some great chawans that are reproductions of historycal pieces, they look nice, but the price is stellar.

I think I have the size of this chawan somewhere at home in one of my books. I will search when I return home tomorrow.
