Kyusu

by shogun89 » Feb 24th, '09, 20:42

Hello everyone,

I just found these nice little pots on Dens. Have been wanting one for a while but haven't wanted to drop $18 to ship from Japan. So does anyone have this, or have thoughts on it.

Thanks :D

$18 for shipping sounds crazy. I'd check O-cha. I ordered a kyusu along with some tea and shipping was like $9-10(only took 4 days to arrive at my doorstep).

As far as that particular kyusu goes, I can say that I like the wrap-around filter. My kyusu has one, and it pours really quick.

I actually got this one last Spring as part of a promo for around 10 bucks. I got it mainly because I wanted to try the 360 screen and did not want to spend a lot in the process since the wrap around kind of creaped me out a bit, kept thinking what might be lurking behind the screen after a year or 2. I am happy to report, nothing has taken up residence behind the screen so far.

The kyusu itself is hefty, not a delicate piece. The lid is not as perfectly fitting as more expensive counterparts, but it is a SOLID kyusu, takes a beatin' and keeps on steepin'.
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

Hi there,

I am thinking of getting the same kyusu from Den's...because it is glazed I figured I could use it for any kind of tea. (I already have an unglazed one that I use for my Japanese greens.) Cool to find out that the screen is removeable!

I think you may have calculated the shipping incorrectly...it looks like shipping this pot anywhere in the continental US would be $5. ...or maybe I'm missing something...

Shopping for tea ware is so much fun!

Later,
Dreamer

I have that pot as well, picked it up last year around the same time Chip got his. I don't really use it that much. I rarely make sencha in that large of an amount so it's not the most useful one to me.

I prefer my unglazed one from Lupicia.

Thank you all very much for your reviews and thoughts. I will keep this pot in mind and give it some thought.
Thanks again.

Pentox,

Could you tell me more about the pot you have from lupicia? I looked at their website and they don't have much for descriptions. Which pot is it and how many ounces does it hold? Is it thinner than the den's pot?

Thanks

I have two of the pots in this series from den's, and they kick major oontz.

I have literally dropped them from several feet onto the hard ground and picked 'em up w/o a scratch. (But please don't do this. I'm just clumsy. If you had worse luck, I'd feel bad.)

The price for shipping would be 5.00 if you just bought the pot, Den's shipping info can be found here

I'm actually pondering buying den's Yutori kyusu but have held off until i can order some new greens to go with it :3 free shipping for orders over $50!

i've been tempted to try to order from the tokoname teapot catalog... but i might wait a bit to see if the exchange rate gets any better...

I have the yutori kyusu. Its pretty nice, but at 10oz it is a little large for my tastes. This was my first kyusu and at the time I thought that 10oz was too small, but after the third infusion you've got 30oz of tea (if you fill it to max). Just something to consider.

I've done that with mine too! I lost count of how many times I have accidentally dropped the lid and it is still in one piece. I definitely can't say that about some of the glass tea ware that I once had. 10oz may seem a little large, but just remember that there is nothing preventing you from not filling up the pot all the way.

I could count on one hand the number of times I've come anywhere near filling those 10 oz kyusu. I make considerably smaller amounts of tea in them all the time, and it comes out fine.

Yeah, there certainly isn't anything wrong with filling them up only part way. Sometimes the tea leaves will stick up toward the top half after pouring, but you can easily knock them down for the next brew. Personally I would prefer a smaller vessel, but that's just me. If you go for one of the pots, I second the recommendation to get one that comes with a tin of tea. Also makes a great gift.
