Looking for small infuser to fit thermos

by knotman » Feb 17th, '09, 12:43

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and I have been having the hardest time finding a specific tea-related item. I have a 34 oz. Nissan Thermos and I am trying to find an infuser that is narrow or moldable enough to fit into it. All I can use it for now is teabags, but I'd like to be able to use it with loose teas. I fill it in the morning at home and then drink it when I get to the office. I don't mind if tea stays in it for a while - I drink black teas and like them very strong.

Any ideas? All the ball strainers I have found seem to be too big. The narrowest part of the opening looks to be about 1 1/4" across. The thermos has a cup-cap, and then the kind of plug you twist up a little so you can pour the liquid into the cup-cap. I'm thinking if such an item doesn't exist, of trying to make my own muslin bags, but that seems like a hassle.

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

I am finding it's better just to brew and pour into the thermos.

I have not seen what you are looking for. I have seen long tea saks
but no way to close the top of them.

What he said.

My mom has been using Adagio's paper filters and has enjoyed them. They could be a good fit for what you need.

Actually these might work quite well:

You might be able to tear off one side of the string and actually
screw the top on with it in place.

I use these for travel all the time. They are a nice size.

Why not skip the infuser and use a tea strainer when you pour?

I think the bag idea is best. That way you would have the tea already measured and ready to go. Easier to take along (put the bags in a baggie) and one less step to perform when refilling the thermos.

I'm with Victoria, just brew it first. That's what I do when I bring tea to work.

I tend to brew the tea in a large pot and fill the thermos from the pot. Works best if you pre-heat the thermos by pouring boiled water into it and letting it sit while the tea brews...then dump the hot water from the thermos to the sink and fill from the pot. :)

Wouldn't work so well if you wanted a new infusion during the day though...

I use Adagio teabags (that you fill yourself) and I like my tea strong and bitter, so I simply leave it in the thermos. Not everyone likes tea that has been steeping too long, but I actually like it that way. :)

I'll also vote for brewing before pouring. Or make some space on your desk and set-up a miniature tea station.
