I came from a very humble background and that was the only tea my parents could afford and I drank it at home all the time when I grew up. I thought tea must be made out of stems or twigs but NOT leaves! I still remember the taste of this.TIM wrote:auhckw wrote:1920s Liu An Stick
Very nice tea but too costly for me.
My friend bought 800g (everything that is left). I bought the left overs 20g.
Liu An stick is not really liu an... The older generations called it Poor man puerh stems. And how expensive could that be?

You should take pics of the leaves themselves auckhw!
Finally home and opened up my EoT order. Sat down with my sample of the Mannuo first, fully aware that I'm unable to purchase this any longer.
Taste is woody but dry, all over the tongue. Really slippery in the mouth and more kuwei on the tongue than in the back of the throat, not much back there. The bitterness is nice though, not overpowering and turns to sweetness pretty quickly. Quite long lasting. I'm also getting the distinct flavor of overripe bananas. hmm. The sweetness is strong, very white-sugar like, underlies all other flavors. I would love to try this in 5, 10 years.

Tasted...
Jia Ji Tuo Cha 2000

Lao Man E - Old Tree Ban Zhang 2008 raw - Super bitter in the first 4th brew. From 5th brew onwards, bitterness drops and give sweetness. This is mixed banzhang with 2 other mountaing (bulang and xxx - dont know how to read). Intending to buy this, maybe later.

Bamboo Raw Puerh - didn't get to try this today, but will someday out of curiosity

Re: Pu of the day
you are drinking the remnants of the sun that shined in the heyday of republic china - I can imagine the bustle of shanghai and the gold taels changing hands over the origonal purchase. Certainly a treasure.
Re: Pu of the day
No leaves were found, cause these sticks used to be left over by-product. The leaves were used, and these were kept aside and processed for cheap consumption.TomVerlain wrote:That is some pretty interesting sticks .. Over the years it has aged very well. It tasted clean, sweet, chinese herb, old taste, smooth. Very good tea. Body felt warm, then sweating. My friend's ear even turned red

We were tasting it at the shop 3g for 3 person is enough. Small pot. Lasted about 8 brew non soak. The sweetness and the herb taste remains at the end but drops as it get weaker, still it is good. Then the shop boiled it. 3 boil brew and the performance went up again.
I have now kept my that few grams in a small metal tin. When I opened it this morning, it smelled so good. I most probably will only drink it on very very special occasion.
My friend who bought the 800g has reserved 100g (from his stock) for me if one day I would decide to buy. I am tempted but saving my funds for the upcoming tea expo next weekend. Maybe if there is nothing to buy there, I may just buy 100g off from him.

The XZH bamboo bulang is nothing like I was expecting, but everything I didn't know I needed. If its wrong, I don't wanna be right. In a word, "yum".
Jim's 1998 CNNP 7542 has some things going for it, too.
I'm in love with the 90s Songpin though.
Now I'm on the hunt for more traditionally-stored teas. Any recommendations, folks? I bet MarshalN knows where to find them!

Re: Pu of the day
0903 from Puerhshop yesterday. I've had this for almost 2 years and I can taste some differences now. There is less flowery taste, especially in the huigan, while there is more leather throughout. I also remember this tea lacking in mouthfeel. It managed to pick some up; it's quite rounded now, velevety feeling that coats my mouth. I enjoyed the session even though the taste wasn't as complex as I'd have liked.
My EoT cakes are at home (other side of the state), getting anxious to try them all, what with all the tasting notes I've been reading.
