Re: What Oolong are You Drinking Right Now?
I love the different spellings for all these teas. Combine this with the different dialects for the teas and it can get really confusing. Here in Bangkok, I can get Qian Li Xiang, which is quite hard to find ordinarily, and, spelled and pronounced by Chao Zhou people, very differently. This tea is still coming in paper wrappings with Chinese characters stamped on the paper after they hand pack it for me.

I was just thinking last night that it must be popular or have special significance within the Chaozhou diaspora.Tead Off wrote:Here in Bangkok, I can get Qian Li Xiang, which is quite hard to find ordinarily, and, spelled and pronounced by Chao Zhou people, very differently. I was able to find some in Wuyishan a few years ago, though it was a qingxiang version, and I had to ask for it specifically.

And I just sent off an order to Jingteashop this morning before noticing this post.

2010 Winter Lishan from FLT. A little more vegetal than the Dayuling, and less aftertaste, at least based on tasting each once. But my taste buds are acting a little funky this morning, so reserving judgement. My tasting companion thought it was too vegetal. I noticed an interesting earthy kind of flavor in the background. The aroma is very sweet, floral and pleasant.
Before that, the aforementioned Sea Dyke Qianlixiang. Reserving judgement until I can experiment more, but seems similar to the Rou Gui (and just as tricky to brew).

Almost all the Thai-Chinese are CZ people. The many small shops in Chinatown selling teas all have more Wuyi tea than anything else. DHP being the top choice with SX and Rou Gui following in the distance. Qian Li Xiang is not easy to find here. Isn't the translation to English something like 1000 li fragrance? Li being a measure of distance.wyardley wrote:I was just thinking last night that it must be popular or have special significance within the Chaozhou diaspora.Tead Off wrote:Here in Bangkok, I can get Qian Li Xiang, which is quite hard to find ordinarily, and, spelled and pronounced by Chao Zhou people, very differently. Highly disappointed with the Taiwanese milk oolong tea I had this morning.
You can't win all the time. Never again from that vendor, anyway.

Autumn Rou Gui from Jing Tea Shop -
This is my second session with this tea. I was not impressed with the first so I used more leaf....and I continue to be unimpressed. Very lack luster in fragrance and flavor.

Anxi mao xie from Jing Tea Shop. I've had it stored for many months now, but I am really glad I finally opened the packet. Nice, light, floral. Slightly fruity. Creamy in the later infusions.
