Pulling more sweetness and thickness out of this one at work. I think using better water, probably a slight temperature drop from using a metal electric kettle (vs. earthenware), and a slightly smaller brewing vessel all played a roll. Still a little vegetal, but I'm getting more of the sweeter / caramelized flavors today and yesterday.

Osmanthus Phoenix Dan Cong Oolong brought to me from China by a friend:
Drank this a while ago, but want to get it off my introduction post. I do not know what year it is from. It has a lovely complex pungent floral smell and does well with very short brew times.

does the pungent smell reflect on the tastebuds, any pronounced bite or astringency ?

Was it one of those that has milk powder in it? Or the ones flavored with something like movie theater popcorn oil?

I brewed this tea again tonight. It has a nice balance of floral and bite. Pretty complex. Have been able to adjust times and water temp to pull many different flavors. Nice to have a tea you can tweak according to your mood. Super short steepings still bring out a complex tea. After about 6-7 steepings a sort of raw flavor comes out that I really do not like. I have found this in a number of Phoenix DC's. Any ideas?

I enjoyed that one very much. It was hard to find reliably in my local whole foods, unfortunately. What do you think of it?

I have never encountered that, I can't imagine what it is.

I have heard that Cheaper (added scent) Dcs often run out of scent to leave the raw tea but I believe that that would normally happen after 3 infusions.

Young trees may not have sufficient root system to fully load the leaves but I would expect the leaves to be spent not throw up new tastes.

Some prefer to have really hot water for the first 2 infusions and then lower the temperature as the infusions progress - were you keeping the temp high for all 7 infusions?

Maybe someone will have a better idea!

Fu Shou Shan, Spring 2010. Still quite thick and buttery, balanced with strong floral and vegetal notes. This tea always makes me feel hungry, even if I have just eaten a huge meal. Anybody else get hungry drinking Formosa oolongs?

Last night I was getting very hungry drinking a lovely Alishan oolong from Norbu, but it was also getting late and I needed dinner!

Today started the day with some SeaDyke red label TKY. It's a busy day without time for gongfu cha, so it's was a thermos full, and will move on next to another 'thermos'-able tea.
