It is so well crafted that it might truly be an old zhu ni. :)

Lovely pot, enjoy it!

I am the last one to ask about purity and exact types of Yixing clays...a different story if I were living in mainland China, HK or Taiwan, but unfortunately I live in the Wild West.

Oh my. The small bodies of those pots make the spouts seem comically large.

I was truly hoping that was the case. It would be wonderful if it turned out to be real old zhuni but I guess we'll have to see if anyone else on here confirms!

It is a very touchy and difficult subject but generally speaking real old zhu ni comes with a hefty price tag and it is not readily available.

Anyway, here's a good reading about the subject if you haven't come across it yet (scroll down to where it says: all about zhu ni clay).

Pictures coming when I catch up to my pot, currently in another city, but for now I just want to brag! I just got a 1990 it 1992 (I got it checked by an expert) Factory One artisan blue LvNi Shui Ping Hu pot! Not so great craftsmanship, but that's why I could afford it. It is amazing. Coming soon!

Kuala Lumpur. There is something about the market here where high end stuff is expensive, cheaper stuff is expensive sometimes (pots and young sheng can go either way, shou feels a but pricey), but mid-range stuff is dirt cheap, like 1/4-1/3 the Chinese or Taiwanese values, as far as I can tell.

Cool, thanks. Surely you had a good trip. One question: did you see any old zhu ni pots for around 100mL? What was the price like?

I guess the teapot stores were all roughly located in one area, right?

Cheers.

Bagua, can I call you "Baggy?"

Sorry for the late reply. This was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Many of the shops are along one street in China Town (I think the east side of the Chinatown square), though some great shops are scattered about as well (thanks to auhckw for leading me to some great spots!).

Higher level pots are sometimes good deals, but often the same or more than I think they would be in Taiwan or China, but it is the mid-range and cheap pots that are knock-your-head-off deals. I saw a set of 5 shui ping hu, 10-years-old clay of mediocre quality and mediocre craftsmanship (but not at all bad!), 1 of each main clay type, selling for just shy of US$100! I think that is a sweet deal!

I have only seen modern zhuni here for cheap (brownish), and they run anywhere from US$100ish on up. The nicer, oranger and older zhuni pots go for similar or higher prices than they do in Korea, and I as I understand USA/China/Taiwan. I looked at some really old zhuni pots in Melaka today, and they were all about $600-700 for old but not master pots. By old I was thinking they were 20ish years, maybe 30, but I don't know!

My favorite zhuni pot ever was about 150 or 200 cc, made by a Master, and was old zhuni, about 10 or 15 years old, in Korea. It was about US$600, which I think is very reasonable for the clay quality and the craftsmanship! I miss that pot. I have haunting dreams about that pot....the one that got away.... :(

Not bad, I'd shell that sort of money out as long as the pot is real old zhu ni.
needaTEAcher wrote:but not master pots.

Not interested for two obvious reasons:

1. Cost
2. Authenticity

We are entering a rich man's game game in here, too risky.

By old I was thinking they were 20ish years, maybe 30, but I don't know!

Well if according to some sources old zhu ni became extinct in 1973 (existing mines), the clay must be at least 30 years old.

Modern zhu ni then. :|

You can have new pots with old clay! The one I love was made 15ish years ago, but the clay is obviously older!

God I love that pot. It is a ball drop shape, so classy, and the clay just sparkles...I think I am really in love here.

Yes drop ball shape is very balanced; I also like shui ping, xishi and lixing; but 100mL is the sweet spot for me.

Now, I missed the old zhu ni clay that has been kept in storage thing, sorry. I guess you didn't have the cash at the time, right?

I love the color variation. This is the pot mentioned above. I don't know much, not even how many CCs (haven't been home yet to test). Also, sorry about the stains! I haven't even had a chance to clean her up.

Ain't she purty though?

Clay:Wen Ge Ni Clay (Cultural Revolution Zini)
Size: 80 ml
Age/Year: Teapot: Modern. Clay: CR (1966-1976)
Walls: Very Thin. Medium-High Firing.
Pour: +/- 6 sec. No drips. Perfect lid fit.
Source: Gift from Uncle who lives in China (Zhejiang)
Tea Pairing: Light to Medium Roast Wuyi Yan Cha.
Info: I have not often seen old Zini clay like this with such thin walls and it took quite a while to find a decent pairing for this one in particular. As High fired Wuyi Yancha/ Aged Sheng Puerh are the teas I drink the most, this pot didn't do well with either of these tea types, which was expected considering you would usually want thicker walls to push more heat into the leaf. I considered young sheng puerh for a while, but I personally like a gaiwan for these as I want to taste and smell everything that type of tea has to offer. I finally remembered I had some very high quality Light Roast Old Tree Shui Xian as well as some Light Roast Da Hong Pao so I proceeded to try both of these in it and the results were astounding. It perfectly accentuated the caramelized light roast, while bringing the elusive vegetal qing tai wei to the forefront of the tastebuds. I had always used modern Zhuni for these light roasts prior to acquiring this teapot and I am so glad I still had some of these teas around as I probably would have settled for a slightly more mediocre tea pairing than the wonderful choice this teapot made for itself.
