Re: The unofficial/official HAGI topic!

Whew, well while waiting for my SO #12 to arrive, I managed to read through all 76 pages of this thread.

First off, I saw many mentions of nanabake, the "7 stages" or "7 changes" of hagi.

The funny thing, though, is that I was familiar with nanabake, but for ninja, not hagi. There's an old saying about the 7 common disguises of the ninja, which is called nanabake (七化け). Though ninja have been around longer than hagiyaki, it's not necessarily a given which one used it first (or if it didn't come from something else altogether). But most likely one did borrow it from the other.

The second thing -- along with the recent SO purchase, I bought a large hagi water canister (mizusashi) as well. I had intended this for long-term water storage, but will this work for a hagiyaki item....?

Very interesting Drax! I did not know you were a Ninja by day.

Not sure what to say about long term water storage in a Hagi. Logic would say no, imho. I would ask Mago. Let us know how you make out!

Looking forward to seeing the pics Drax!
It probably will depend on the glaze and
how long you intend to keep the water
in there. Most likely will be fine. But
your own tests will see.

Thanks, loving the Spirit wan! The white is not really unusual, in fact I would say very usual for Deishi; his most common glaze and style. It's very much like the Hagi Special Offer #7 Deishi Oni Hagi Shiro Wan, don't you think? Except the shape is more flared.

I guess the purposely wavey rim looks pretty different for Deishi. The white looks very common for Deishi. Looks more like his flared Deishi Shiro with wavey rim.

And a bit like the Gyokuro Cups from SO #3? They were wavy too. Even though I have several pieces in this style, I think Deishi white is my favorite. I couldn't pass this one up. :)

My Spirit arrived today, and I love love love the glaze! No photos yet as I had to leave the house soon after it arrived, but just had to post and comment on how spectacular it is. The rough sand and the translucent glaze are an amazing combo. Wish it were bigger, but I can live with that.

... how much bigger?

Don't drop this one's koudei on your koudei unless you are wearing steel tips (which should be part of any midwife's uniform)!!!

I don´t think the spirit would come out very well from an encounter with steel tips

Reminds me...I want to splurge on new combat boots this winter...

LOL... you know I love the giants. My big sansai tebineri is my favvvvvvvvvorite. I realize I'm in the minority on this, but I get very frustrated with ultra-small brews in tiny cups. I brew in small multiple infusions on teas that demand it, but I go large every chance I get. There is something very comforting about holding a large yunomi/wan like the sansai, enjoying the warmth in both hands, and enjoying the way the aroma and flavor of the tea changes as it gradually cools. I am usually able to finish it before it gets cold... and what I dont finish gets dumped into a carafe or pitcher in the fridge for hodge-podge iced tea.

And what heavy thing do you think a midwife would be likely to drop on her steel-toed koudei as an occupational hazard? After about 1300+ babies, I have not dropped one yet. And if I ever do, it will land on the bed, not on my toe!
