I''ll have to try this again. I got a sample of it from finepuer.com and was not very impressed. Do you have any experience with these guys auhckw? They are out of malaysia. It almost seems as if they leave their samples exposed to light(they seem very dark even young teas). I don't know about whole cakes though.

No I don't have experience with them.

It is good tea by its own but I would not say this tea is impressive. I didn't find it enjoyable to drink now yet cause kind of strong. I think need more time, hope it will turn better.

2004 Kunming 8668 Red Label Iron Beeng Raw - Label seems wrong, possibility this is 2004 from the internet finding. Anyway, I actually liked this more than the 2000 version of 8668. This seems to aged faster too. Still strong to be enjoyable. Some bitterness is there.

2011 Dayi Xin Hai 357g Raw - Finally managed to try this today. Not smoky. Not astringency. Taste is bitter. Saliva flow is normal. 6th brew and is started to drop quickly. Not much sweetness. I think the price is overpriced for such taste now. If it is 60% the price, then it is reasonable.

That said, this tea is compressed July 2011 (less than 3 months). Kind of early to conclude anything. Will revisit this in the next few months.









We tried Dayi 70th Anniversary after we tried Xinhai. Why we decided to try it because Clouds gave the Dayi 70th Anniversary 4 stars and Xinhai 1.5 stars. Based on the stars, it seems that Xinhai is rated too low compared to 70th.

Possible Clouds gave Xinhai 1.5 stars in comparison with the Xinhai big piece 1911kg version, which he rated very good.

If we were to rate 70th and Xinhai with each other...
70th Anniversary: 3 stars
Xinhai 357g: 2 stars

Speaking of stars...

2011 Gold Dayi would probably get 4 stars in the comparison with the 2 above. Gold is much stronger, warmer, deep, unique taste. But if compared to the 3 when new price, Gold is the most expensive. Cost about 100% more than 70th and 40% more than Xinhai.

We were talking about what tea from Dayi this year that is outstanding. We have not tried all, but among our list for raw... Gold, Yiwu and Rabbit are the 3 worth exploring or keeping. And if talk about value for money, Dayi Pu Zhi Wei raw is good.

I'm gonna try to use the format at the beginning of this thread. I'm not a pro at rating tea so bear with me.

Astringency - Some, gets a bit more noticeable in later infusions
Smoke - None
Dryness-(mouth) - Some, gets more noticeable the more I drink
Mouthfeel - More on the thin side, it's pretty light
Hui gan - Some, the aftertaste becomes slightly bitter, then sweet
Flavor - Good, very flowery and sweet with a nice little punch
Overall value - Well, I would not pay the 100+usd for one tuo.
Purchase again - The sample, yes. My pocketbook cannot support a habit of me drinking this with any regularity.

I really enjoyed drinking this. It made me feel quite invigorated. It had a great smell to it as well. Kinda flowery, grassy, and something like plum or some other fruity scent. It gave me a wonderful warm feeling all the way up my head.

Working through a long session with my 2006 Haiwan purple bud, enjoying the long, sweet finish after the smoky, astringent start. Mmmm.

1998 Red Dayi Iron Beeng Raw - This is rare cause how often do you see Dayi has Iron Beeng? This is my first. Taste wise is very obvious Meng hai signature tasted. Quite good. Potent and has good potentials to age futher.

2006 Dayi Raw - Cannot remember the chinese name of this. This is special cause it is being blessed with prayers. It is said that the inner center part is made from old material. Quite a big piece. Taste wise is quite unique. Kind of nice.

2010 Dayi Tien Ren Ba Bu Ripe - People would think that having nice packaging would sacrifice the tea quality. This is not true. This ripe is quite good and fulfilling. A little bitter but follows by sweetness. The raw version (blue box) is also very good. Smoky strong with good future to go.

2003 Zhong Cha Fangcha (Menghai) raw - Good menghai signature taste. Lasted many brew. Potent.

2004 Hua Lian Brick Raw - Friend bought this in Macao directly from the producer there. This is Macao storage. Seems like it has aged faster with the storage there. A little wet taste but not too bad. Taste a little like late 80s Ba Zhong Yellow Mark. Woody taste.

2007 Dayi Bamboo Wrap Brick raw - The colour of the tea broth seem darker than a 2007 dried stored should be. Taste wise ok, but nothing impressive.

2011 Xia Guan 8113 raw - Very typical xia guan signature smoky smell and taste. Smoky sweet. Quite cheap, but I don't think I will buy this.





I should introduce the shop magic sponge next time, most of their cups are stained. Their porcelain cha hai is disgustingly stained.

2008 Xiaguan 'Happy' tuo.


I'm happy that these things don't cost too much. very smoky, but it doesn't feel like it's eating away at your esophagus when you drink it. Some fruit flavour, some leather. I dunno if they are worth buying really. I have had plenty of xiaguan tuo's that are similar to this one. The sweetness is okay. Some barley grain flavour too. Later cups taste like young pu-erh thats..well, later. mushroom, kinda rough mouthfeel and thin body, but not as thin as other teas that were along this point.

Finished off the last of the 2009 Wuliang Shan loose sheng puerh from Norbu, one of several loose young puerhs that helped me to appreciate the joys of a more aggressive puerh than the shus I started with.
