Very interesting about the child and the bird, I could see in the image there was a string going to the bird but without the story I could only guess what they were doing. The other side has some writing on it, I will take a picture of it soon so you can have a look. If you could tell me what it says that would be great! As for the tea I use in it, dark roasted oolongs, such as TGY.

Here is the reverse side of the Yixing pot from my previous post, and a couple of close-ups of the writing. The third one is a bit out of focus, since the characters are quite small. Hopefully it is legible.

The calligraphy contains two parts, the name of the pot and a poem. The two larger characters are Cha Yuan which roughly translates as Tea Destiny. The poem is quite common on Teapots. It was written during the Tang Dynasty by Wang Wei. This is only a part of the poem. The name of the poem is; A Mountain Villa on an Autumn Night

My translation:
明月松间照，
清泉石上流。
Moonlight is shining through the pines
A limpid spring flows over the rocks.


This is the whole poem:
山居秋暝 王维

空山新雨后，天气晚来秋。
明月松间照，清泉石上流。
竹喧归浣女，莲动下渔舟。
随意春芳歇，王孙自可留。
After a rain, the empty mountain
Stands autumnal in the evening,
Moonlight is shining through the pines,
A limpid spring flows over the rocks. .
Bamboos whisper while a washer-girls heads home,
Lotus-leaves yield before a fishing boat,
And what does it matter that springtime has gone,
While you are here, my offspring will remain here.

The last line is a subject of much debate in China because it is not known if the author meant that he hopes his children will live on the mountain after he had died.

This is just my translation. Everyone who translates this poem, does so a little differently.

Info: I purchased this pot from a very well known tea and teapot collector from Taiwan. Really a nice piece of history. Love the feel and the clay is remarkable. The low fired clay takes the edge of some of the harsher notes of wet stored sheng. Has truly become my little buddy.

Info: This is an old friend I've been using for years. Even when dry it smells like Shou Puer inside. It is an extremely well seasoned pot, which was much lighter in color when it was new. It actually looks a little darker in real life than it does in the photos and the inside is almost black.

It's a mushroom cloud. He does a lot of post-apocalyptic sort of stuff, with skulls and destroyed buildings and other rather grim subject matter.

I saw a rather interesting show about his work on PBS a few years back, it might still be around somewhere if you are interested.

If I remember correctly, all his work is, in fact, functional.

Thanks for the clarification Margules. TBH, that thought...It's a mushroom cloud... actually came to my mind, however I quickly dispelled that thought in favor of a more desirable one! And bizarrely I wondered where that thought came from. It also resembles a broccoli floret!

Could also be used as a prop in Stephen King's The Stand!
