Most of these kettle have one or two small urushi plugs in the base, the casting method leaves one or two small holes in the kettle and then these are filled with a mixture of iron sand and urushi. not all are built this way but most. This stuff does not deal well with being exposed to raw flame, but it can last for a very long time over electric or charcoal flame, though it quickly degrades if places on the heating source while the kettle is empty.

That is very useful information and now I understand why they're not the same as my cast iron dutch oven.

This is my new tetsubin. It arrived one week ago from Japan and I have been using it every day. Now if I could only find something more graceful than an electric hot plate to heat it up...

How long do tetsubin last generally? Do they just rust out?

yes it can!....
its just a halogen bulb heater that hario had used for coffee siphon heating works nicely with small tetsubins and similar vessels. i've even attempted to boil water using an yixing pot with it. not v fast but it doesnt risk busting of the ceramic.

will be buying some different bulb soon to see if i can push the output from 400watts to 500 watts for even faster heating

i've a 1500 watt halogen heater as well but that's way too big a heating area and too hot for delicates

Gosh, I'm glad I asked. My current setup is not ideal. I heat most of the water in a glass kettle, but my clay kettle still gets heated on the stove too, as I lack a small burner. Because I'm careless, it has developed a hairline already. Not deep enough to be a crack, but since it's zisha it bleeds quite a bit of water.

I'll get one of those asap and (a substitute kettle). Thanks, kz.

it depends on your kettle size, because if you have a kettle with a reasonably wide bottom, getting one of those 1500watt halogens could be good, you can boil water at the 400-500 watt setting for fragiles

the siphon heater is not very big, the top glass is about 10cm diameter

i had viewed the topic silently for a long time too. in the earlier days i had a few tetsubins from i**chu which was just plain.. "bad".. so never really used them. this's probably the first couple of proper tetsubins i've ever owned.

All the Iwachu I have seen and owned are "tetsubin" teapots. For the westerner, this was as good as it got for many years.
