this is a bowl by Ceramics professor and woodfire fanatic Jason Hess,

He has this to say "Torn Teabowl, celadon liner glaze, wood soda fired porcelain, kaolin flashing slip. 30 hour firing 2011"

This is another unique bowl I picked up two of these on my recent trip to flagstaff, the kiln site is always amazing and I love talking shop with the students and artists there.

Todays Matcha was " harimaenesicha yukimatchiri kan".

I know it seems like a got an entire kilns worth of ceramics while in Flagstaff but it's coming to an end soon I promise.

This bowl was made by Eugene Brosseau.

He has this to say about it.
"Teabowl/Sculpture created same as (Kazan-seki). fired in same kiln at same time, different location, toward back fire box. Same liner glaze as as (Kazan-seki). Made with pioneer day clay without sawdust."

I named this bowl "Bonetree" because the outside reminds me of, well, a trees bark, and my girlfriend remarked that the inside reminded her of a marrow bone.

these bowls are very heavy and non traditional. I am looking forward to seeing some new works made by Eugene this summer based on some minor changes we discussed to improve functionality without sacrificing any of the artistic qualities.

Dens organic Matcha, has a great berry like finish very smooth.


A lot of metallic copper coloring going here that I just could not pick up.

Yet another great chawan blairs!
I would be really interested in hearing about the minor changes you discussed with Eugene to make the chawans more functional?
That 5th shot evoked yosemite, and that thin vertical line a waterfall.
Beautiful and interesting chawan.

We talked about the lip, making some adjustments to facilitate an easier wipe down with a chakin. Also discussed the size of the bowl, the foot, and a little bit about interior shaping.... Nothing major, these are after all meant to be sculptural bowls, though I do have first dibs on one to be fired this summer that will hopefully be an equal balance of form and function.

this is the sibling to the Jason Hess piece I posted previously.

I REALLY LOVE the flashing on this one, the sienna hues look great on the porcelain body. I also feel Jason has a very "finished" feel to all of his work.

Thx b. It is my largest bowl - now that you mention it, I think it would be fun to do some matcha sharing with it (I've never done that before, where we all sip from the same bowl).
I have posted pics of the giant tengu previously - pages 69 & 71 I think, and there should be a shot of the koudai as well.
That Hess bowl is really beautiful - as I gaze at your most recent pics of it, I found myself wondering about the width of the opening? It looks narrow, and I wanted to ask you if it's more challenging to whisk?
ps - does Hess have a site where I can check out his work and maybe even purchase a piece if I am caught by one?

Out of the two bowls posted by Hess the second one is a bit more of a challenge to whisk in but nothing too difficult. I have seen winter bowls that are even narrower and I would be interested to see how one prepares matcha in those tall narrow winter bowls. jason does not have a website that I know of but several galleries carry his work.
