Teamasters' Spring Ali Shan (1450m). A bit flat and disappointing, but just a bit.

I'm working my way through a small pot of Republic of Tea's milk oolong (A birthday gift from my oh-so-thoughtful brother). It's rainy, cold, and gross today so I plan to stay curled up with my tea for a while.

Last night, worked on a tasting of Norbu's Fall 2010 Jin Guan Yin, a greener oolong. This was my first gongfu cha tasting of this one, because I opened the package for the first time while traveling and without proper gongfu setup. It just wouldn't get bitter or lose a rich sweetness no matter how I abused it. I was bulk brewing it in my thermos and really impressed with the results under those harsh conditions, and became very eager to see what it could do when more carefully brewed at home.

2.3 grams in porcelain gaiwan, about 75mL water—1 gram/ounce
Water 205°F/96° C

1st, about 30 seconds
Sweet and rich, floral, delicious, marvelously pleasant

2nd, about 20 seconds
A little more spiciness in addition to the floral sweetness

4th, forgot at 2-3 minutes
Splendidly rich, floral, spicy, but no hint of bitterness

5th, also quite a long infusion
Less sweet, but amazingly floral and still very rich, deep flavor

6th, shorter infusion
Lighter and sweeter, deliciously floral

7, 8…and more, out to about a dozen infusions, probably could have been longer if I hadn't overdone the middle ones so much.

I really like this tea, and particularly the staying power both when brewed gongfu cha and when I've bulk brewed it for my thermos—it still has wonderful flavor hours later, not to be compared to the fresh brewed, of course, but far better than most green oolongs I've tried for that use. I just ordered quite a bit more, anticipating a lot of afternoons at the office with the thermos full of this one.

Tie Gua Yin Premium Grade - Light but gives a very good aroma. Could only last 4 brew. 5th brew is quite tasteless.

hahaha.... Tie Guan Yin from Anxi with stems like this is farmers grade  Specially it only last for under 5 infusion. Taiwanese TGY is a very different story.

2 diff vendors said the same. With stems of X place is good and hard to get. Quantity limited. Probably not as premium as the price tag. It is 100g @ MYR200 (USD 67). Is it premium?

Anyway, this is not something special that I would offer in TeaSwap :)

Speaking of which there is this famous shop where they have their own TGY farm and factory in china. They have a range of grades. They are quite established here for it. I could probably do a combo of small samples of their grades and let you guys try. But I need to discuss with my seniors first and see which is good and special. I do seek advice for untouched territories like this. If they said it is pure standard, then will skip.

Premium TGY from Anxi starts around $800 US and can goes up to $4500 per pound (competition grade double or triple that price). Stems are considered lesser, because it adds a woody element to the brew. High grade TGY is not about robust and how the floral hit you in the front, but its about the balance. Very different from Taiwanese TGY with stem and 3 leaves.

Finished up a 5th and 6th brew on a new 2011 Jin Xuan (milk oolong) I bought from Perennial Tea House here in Seattle--a very nice and smooth way to start the day.

Drinking 2010 Bai Hao from FLT right now--the more I drink this tea, the better I like it ... soon I will need more!

Just finished drinking some of Tea Trekkers Wu Yi Shan
Phoenix Oolong. I used two tablespoons of leaf in a 200ml gaiwan.

Dry leaf laid out.

After 4th infusion.

After 4th infusion.

I got to 17 steeps and quit. There was still a lot of flavor at the end and I could have kept drinking for many more, but I was getting pretty tired.

 For four brews...yikes

After being given a tea like that, for a price like that, I personally would seriously question the intent of whoever sold me that said tea...

Wow that's pricey. So is that pretty much a standard price people in anxi pay? Just curious how you know this?
