I would imagine the glaze and clay would have something to do with the porosity and would vary from piece to piece. Oddly enough, the cup was not a heavy leaker. After a couple of uses, the moisture at the koudai vanished. And, yes, you are right. After 1 use, I could see the crackles appearing.

Are the cracks a defect or a feature?

I didn't want to sound like an expert. I realy thougt it happend after your special treatment;)
anyway if that is a high fired pot the porosity of the body(clay) has nothing to do in this case (I suppose)

To my knowledge, Hagi is not high fired and porosity is a feature of this work. Mine is not unusual.

For Kaminix: Depends on how you look at it. Most users find this desirable. It's kind of alive. Maybe some day I can squeeze it and get tea out of it. :D

I don't think we've had before and after photos showing the changes that Hagi undergoes. How about Hagi heads? Care to post before/after pics?

I just use very hot tap water and a dry dish towel every night when I put it away is all.

The weirdest thing about Hagi, you have the staining of the crackles, but generally the surface never stains.

Kaminix, this is a very common trait, endearing to most Hagiphiles.

There is a thing called the 7 stages of hagi, which is a steady progression over many years as the Hagi ages.

And each Hagi piece will be different.

Actually, there are many member examples posted over the 90 pages of this topic.

Thanks Ian for showing your Eiichi, a very good example.

I am sure members will always post pictures of before and after shots as this "is Hagi" in its element.

Mine definitely stains as you can see in the photo.

They are a feature and loving nursed by their owners. They help to make each piece special, because even if two pieces are generally the same in appearance, the crackling never is.

Which is actually why I said generally. I am thinking maybe we have one that has "stained" but it is more of a discoloration. It is possibly also the oddest of the stained cracklers. It is an "Ice Split" also by Yamane Seigan.

Then again, your Seigan is the only one I have seen like this style/glaze. Where did you purchase it, btw? It could be a flukey kind of piece.
