Hello Kevin, welcome to the forum!Kevangogh wrote:This is an incorrect assumption. We are fully "Japan based" I would say.Ed wrote:The company can be based anywhere but they are still shipping from Japan. I do believe O-Cha is still "based" in Arizona even though the actual business is conducted in Japan. This new vendor reminds me a bit of O-Cha, with the reward points and whatnot. The prices are particularly attractive... but only if the qualitea is good.

I don't plan to post here much and I definitely will not promote my site here out of respect to the company that owns the forum. However, on occasion I've seen some misinformation regarding our company and products so under that situation I may post.
For starters, someone here was making comments on the chat about our Hatsumi sencha awhile back, whether it was medium steamed, deep steamed, etc. Actually, it is steamed halfway between medium and deep. Sometimes these things are not so cut and dry - each tea has it's own optimum steaming time and the guy who does the steaming is like an artisan, he has to make a judgment call. Outside of steaming, there is also the roasting (drying under heat) time. This also makes a difference in the taste. When I get samples, the supplier will often mention the "roasting" time of the sample he is providing. Something to consider...

Vendors are permitted to post as long as the posts are not self promoting, which yours was not.
I think it is very important that a vendor indentifies themself first, which you have done. This way the post can be read and understood under the proper context.
Correcting misinformation is certainly permitted under forum rule #6.

I am happy to see Kevin post here in order to correct misinformation, but I would also enjoy hearing more from him since he knows a lot more about Japanese tea than most of us do. That roasting issue he just mentioned is a super example as well as the artistry involved in steaming.
Of course, I know that O-Cha has its own fine forum, but there is only so much time and so many forums!

I never said you were living in Arizona, and I never said anything about the ethnicity of your wife.Kevangogh wrote:This is an incorrect assumption. In response to your statement about Hatsumi; I have no idea what it is like this year, but last year it was the most dusty/powdery Japanese tea I have ever encountered. Many others noted the same thing. I suppose we assumed it had been either extremely deep steamed or pulverized in some way. But maybe you should start your own thread if you really want to discuss your own tea.
Jack_teachat: Please do post back here when you get your order. You are the guinea pig!

You stated we are Arizona based, we are not. That's my point.Ed wrote:I think you've missed the point of this thread.
Even if your comments were true, you also said the same thing about our well acclaimed Yutaka Midori and have even gone as far as to call it, "Yutaka Meccha." Anyone (besides you perhaps) who has tried it knows better so this does not speak too highly of your credibility.Ed wrote:In response to your statement about Hatsumi; I have no idea what it is like this year, but last year it was the most dusty/powdery Japanese tea I have ever encountered. Eh hem, Mod intervention: Since a statement regarding O-Cha was made by Ed, and the comment was not correct, said vendor is welcome to post a correction or rebuttal.
Since that has been clarified, it would be advisable to get back on topic.
Thanks,

So, I recieved my package from Umami-Chaya and it almost began very badly, however this had nothing to do with the tea itself or the vendor for that matter....This morning (Mon 20th) I went round the back of my house to unlock my back gate and to my absolute horror I spotted my order lying on the ground! It appears that the postman had just dumped my parcel over my gate when nobody was home rather than bothering to fill out a 'while you were out' slip! I suspect it was a contract worker filling in for our regular postman, however I shall definitely be making a complaint to the Royal Mail. To make things worse, the box was totally saturated with rain, meaning it must have been there since at least Saturday as we had heavy rain on Sunday! Fortunately because the tea was properly packaged it didn't get wet, but as you can probably imagine, I was not best pleased!
Anyway....

I've just finished my first session with the Yame Sencha Kurogi Supreme and am very pleased to report that I am rather impressed with what I have received! The aroma of the dry leaf was beautifully vibrant and fresh. The tea is sold as a "chu-mushi" or "mid-steamed" and I would say this is about right, as the leaf is a nice mixture of needles and smaller pieces. (Worth noting also that the vendor had just added a Fuka version of the same tea!)

The parameters I used in my pre-heated Kyusu were 4.5g leaf, 160 ml water, 70 *C, 50 secs, 30 secs, 1 min, 2min (slowly increasing temp)

Now I've made the mistake of trying to describe in detail the flavours and sensations of a tea after one session before, so I'm not going to do that this time! Briefly though, the tea had a wonderful grassiness to it with a only a slight astringency - this intensified on the second steep and the third was wonderfully light and sweet. Next time I might adjust my parameters slightly to try and get one more steep out of it, but to be perfectly honest I was quite satisfied with just the three!

Overall then, the impression I get is that this vendor is dealing in some very good Japanese tea, and based on my enjoyment of this one I could probably see myself re-ordering from them.
Hope this is helpful!
Jack
