do you have a precis for mere mortals such as I :?

if not then my idea is to follow the advice of teachatters and others that claim to have had beneficial results from using the charcoal - and follow the practices that they have adopted
There is no question as to the 'effect' BC gives. Asians have used it for centuries and still do. Sometimes it's good to separate the myth from the facts and science makes that attempt to explain.I think Intuit is just pasting what she has gotten off the web. It may not be her own language and is therefore difficult for lay people to understand.

The bottom line is that charcoal is charcoal. It will give a little bit of extra filtering, but there's nothing particularly special about bamboo charcoal. Any will help to remove things like sediment, chlorine, etc., as the water passes over/through it, but none will affect things like mineral content of the water (unless maybe you don't rinse it and it releases a bunch of charcoal dust in the water).

To the OP's question about other charcoal, I have used good quality pellet charcoal (as opposed to the cheap flakes) and it did a great job -- better than bamboo charcoal. Since moving to a place with good water with very little chlorine, however, it hasn't provided any real benefit over a Brita filter.

The one thing that bamboo charcoal has going for it is it's shape; a solid chunk that's convenient to put in and take out as needed; it just doesn't do quite as good of a job as the pellet stuff. In the end, what you're really doing is a small touch of extra filtering either way.

OK, I've ordered some bamboo charcoal from DTH.
Although I have perfect water and think charcoal would be a waste of money.
(for me not you) I couldn't stand not having anything knowledgeable to say on the Topic.

I have charcoal, and I've used it a few times, but around here the water is sufficiently good that, with a decent basic filtration system, I really can't tell the difference between our filtered water, and the same water using charcoal. YMMV. For the record, I think we are on the same water source as ABx.
