I wouldn't consider either of those "loud" especially if there is a decent amount of black ink scroll work in the room. As the first one seems to Hint at ink on paper.

Whereas the second one looks ink like but it also looks almost cast iron like, so it could blend in with other tea utensils.

Plus neither are incredibly eye catching though they look extremely well crafted, and upon further inspection they really grab the eye with their intricacies.

I love the top one. It is loud, but I think I could do a tea setup in which it would fit right in.

As others have said here and for me, Loud or Soft is a matter of context, true for most things I think.

I will submit the following
Thanks,

Michael,

I'm no expert in this but I've liked playing this game and giving my view points, and I'm starting to formulate some ideas where things can be distinctive, but not loud. This is muted colors, and the colors and pattern itself almost brings to mind a very tea stained piece that has been used for a very long time. Its very pleasing to look at and different, but personally I don't think it would detract from a tea Ceremony. But maybe I should revisit the post describing loud vs soft, and see if I'm contradicting his definitions with my descriptions.

Adam

Adam,
I think your observations are right on in this case. I posted this image as it also reminded me of the close-up imagery of tea stained crazing that I enjoy so much.

Thanks for taking the time to view and comment. I always think its important to move outside our comfort or expertise zone and test our observation and to have the courage to make a statement.

Thanks for commenting,
Michael

Cory, I almost feel that anything short of a very unnatural colored chawan that is basically a single color would usually be soft. That includes slightly textured (or textured appearance) such as your oil spot. The shape also doesn't seem to be very unique as where just the shape would detract.

So I'm saying soft. (for both)

MAHALO !
thanks for your comments

just back a week now from japan. was in kuroda toen, my favorite shop in shibuya.

anyone out there want to comment on 'functionality' of a chawan ?

in otemae, usually the hot water is whisked then dumped out into the kensui (waste water container). this step, the chawan is inverted holding the chawan w/ fingers on the koudai. this 'gripability' or the ability to grasp is very important. i handled an amazing looking chawan by a notable artist. upon inverting the chawan w/ fingers the chawan almost slipped from my fingers. the koudai was not 'functional'.

thoughts ? anyone have this issues ?

any users out there want to comment ? makers ?

Yep, have several chawan that are very pretty, but sketchy on the foot ring. Either sharp parts, or too shallow/too deep. A heavy, glossy glaze can be a problem too.

Of course, these are things you can't try if you purchase online, but it is something I notice.
