Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
Chips do bother me simply because of the appearance, but they can also be more important than that. The restaurant industry in the U.S. is required to stop using chipped/cracked service ware because the chip can become a place that harbors bacteria and other unwanted nasties. Not to mention that a sharp edge is a hazard as well.
Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
So far I havent chipped any teaware and hope that continues although I suppose the streak will end eventually. I have dropped several glass lids and a teacup but so far my reactions with my foot has slowed the fall enough to keep them from breaking.
It would depend on the location and sharpness of the chip. I have several chipped plates that I use all the time but if its a chip on the lip of a cup and is sharp at all then its either smoothed or trashed. Overall though I think chips like like dings in a car add some character showing its used and has some history.

herbal: ginseng, fresh ginger, dried roses, tulsi, dried orange peel and I can't seem to remember what the heck else I threw in there... oh yeah hongzhao (jujube - a kind of red date)

Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
Like Trey, I tend to have all-or-nothing teaware hazard events... I either miraculously watch as the point of impact creates a bounce with no breakage... or I watch a massive shattering.
I do have a chipped piece that I use quite a bit. I've purchased several pieces from an Etsy vendor called Mahoggle... my favorite being this massive tumbler/yunomi with a beautiful glaze. On my last Mahoggle order, I got a few gift items for the holidays, and one of the yunomi had a chip/flake near the lip. Its still very usable, and the chip doesn't bother me much at all. Strangely, the shallow flaked area seems to always find my bottom lip when I sip... makes for interesting textural experience. I'm not sure if I do that by accident or by unconscious intent.
Autumnal Flush Darjeeling from Lochan in my cup this morning, and iced "An Appetite Suppressant" signature blend with my lunch.. mmm.

Glad to see not everyone hates all chips
However chips in teaware reallllly do bother me, a major distraction, although I try to put it into perspective. Part of what drives me nutz, it is only a split second of carelessness usually to blame ... I can be careful but for a second and ding ... a chipped spout or chipped or broken lid. I usually punish myself for a year or two with each use ... not very zen-like.
Recently I was able to repair a fave Kenji Kyusu after I chipped the spout when it was virtually brand new. Got out an extra fine diamond sharpener and ground it down to better than new. Shuweet save!!!
Began the TD with Zencha Fuga LE. SweeTea joined this tasting while Lil Bit paid a visit.
Next up, a tasting of Matcha Yame from Zencha with DW. Last up, a tasting of Zencha Fuji the Ultimate.

Well, I haven't been lucky enough to chip any teaware yet...nope, when I've had a physically destructive moment with a piece of teaware, it has been total destruction
I suspect that if the item was still usable I would keep on using it.
Today's tea so far, Ceylon Silver Tips from ToT...nice basic Ceylon for breakfast. YM from o-cha right now...time for the 2nd steep.

Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
Awhile back I chipped the spout of my least favorite teapot. Bad news is that it wreaked havoc with pouring, so no, I haven't used it since. Good news is that it was my least favorite teapot and I was thinking about consigning it to the outer darkness anyway. So maybe this was a Freudian chip?
An Assam breakfast cup or two earlier in the day and a cup or two of a green Chinese needle tea later on. I'm feeling a cup of Da Hung Pao coming on very shortly.

Re: Saturday TeaDay 1/09/10 CHIP?
I've been lucky enough not to chip anything yet, but if I did, I would likely not use it anymore. It would interrupt me during the heating, brewing, and/or drinking of tea far too much.
