These two different teas are named for their varietals.

Sae Midori is mild and sweet.

YM is pretty intense, a full throttle experience.

I think they are quite different and both are definitely worth trying!

+1 I agree with Chip. YM is awesome, it is by far my most FAVORITE!

Sae Midori is much milder and definitely sweeter as Chip mentions, a good starter green for those fairly new to greens or if you want a milder tea, and I believe it is a bit easier to brew than the YM too.

I prefer the intensity of the YM Brian, I believe you will too.

GO for both, you will not regret it!!!

Perfect, this is exactly what I was looking for, thanks Chip and Mrs.! I have one of the Den's fukamushi that is pretty mild, the grassy and veg flavors seem really subdued in favor of umami and rich mouth feel, and then some of the other senchas seem more traditional grassy, and a bit easier to overbrew and go bitter (the fukamushi seems a bit more forgiving). I like having both, nice to have the variety. Sounds like a similar situation with the YM and SM from O-cha. They'll both be going in my cart

A good sencha will allow you to bump up the amount of leaf, making a richer and fuller cup ... to a limit. Maybe try more leaf?

I'm trying not to go AS psycho as I did last year (think I ended up with 7 bags or more of shincha!!! ahhhhhhhhh pocket book)...

Already got kiramaki(ended up giving it to a friend as a gift last season but he told me it was awesomeness), YM, and SM from O-cha preorded. I ended up reordering more YM and SM last year so expecting good things, and tried the sencha version of kiramaki->miyabi, it was tastylicious!

Now last year I only tried one other vendor-Zencha's takumi, don't think I am gonna try them this year unless there are good reviews!

Temomi and hashiri from sugimoto's (VERY EXCITED!). Trying 2010 Shin-cha Hachijyuhachiya (88th Night) from Maeda-en. And I think I am gonna stop there for the sake of not living off aloo/chawwal/roti/daal! ...hahahahahahahahahahahahaha, gotta love tuition refunds

Haven't been on here much lately, but when I saw the Shincha topic, I thought I'd get in on the act! LOL

I've pre-ordered 6 packets from O-cha. I have gone for Uji Kirameki (1), YM (4) and SM (1), as they are my favourite teas from this vendor. I decided to buy a few more this year than last and give a couple to my shodo (calligraphy) teacher, as she is a tea addict! I might also order a few packets from Zencha and perhaps some other tea vendors, not sure yet.

All this talk of YM vs SM has me curious if anyone has tried the Yuuki Yutaka (blend of SM and YM) from Yuuki-Cha.

I missed out on it last year and would like to hear what people thought.
