13 year old GD Alex had her first taste of Mariage Freres tea this morning and loved it! Her favorite has always been Black Currant Tea (can't remember what brand), but as I told her she wasn't a baby any more, and she needed to graduate to a finer tea!

My grandma drinks what she calls "El cheap-o Orange Pekoe teabags." My mom used to drink it occasionally when I was growing up. She takes it more seriously now that she's on a coffee fast (as a form of protest, I think), but I'm the first one to be this passionate about it in my family.

Trying to finish off my Teavana Golden Jade sample today... For how much it costs, I am not impressed.

Yes and no. My mother will drink it occasionally (always bagged), especially since she doesn't like the taste of coffee, but she'd always encourage me to get it if I wanted it (and at restaurants, I always got excited if they brought out a box of options :D ). I've only known my dad to drink iced tea, except on very rare occasions when he'll drink it hot - but for hot beverages he's much more likely to go for coffee. My aunt drinks iced tea... all the time. As far as generations back, I really have no idea - I only have one grandparent, only 2 growing up (and one was out-of-state, so I didn't see her often), and don't recall seeing either of them drink tea, at least not with any regularity.

As for me, Fukamushi Sensha this morning. Felt like some green tea while getting the grocery list together since I have a cold - well, mostly just congestion, but either way, feeling crummy usually leads to me wanting green tea. Mental thing, I guess. Will likely get some vanilla/peach oolong here shortly.

Artmom, this is actually interesting in the context of the topic, should anyone ever ask your GD about her interests in tea ... her tea roots run pretty deep!

Basically first gen here, I only have memories of iced teas ... and my mom for tooooo many years only ever served saccharin sweetened iced tea powder mix, bleh ... so, sorry Mom, can't include your tea!

My "job" for many years was to load up the percolator coffee maker after dinner for the following morning ... yet in my entire life if I poured all the coffee I ever drank into a measuring cup it would be less than a cup total.

Now oddly, the tea water is flowing upstream as my parents have started drinking herbal teas (both can't drink any caffeine). I cannot help but think I have somewhat influenced them on some level ... that would be astounding.

Not Really...both of my parents drink tea nearly every day...just not very good tea. The english tea tradition carried through both my parent´s families since their history in North America goes back to the early settlements. My grandmother on my dad´s side even has a collection of antique english style pots. :)

Definite a first generation. I tried getting my mother into drinking tea with me (since i converted my brother  ) but it didn't last long, she said my teas were unsweetened even after putting a teaspoon of sugar in a cup.

I'm not including southern sweet tea btw.

On my mom's side of the family, at least, the tea tradition goes way back. My grandfather was born in England and my grandmother was from Quebec, enough said, haha... Also, my grandmother had congenital heart problems, so she never drank coffee-- just really strong black tea. She collected teacups as well, which she passed on to my mother and my aunts, who also love tea (my mom is more of a coffee person than her sisters are, though). My mom and my aunts got their first tastes of tea in those tea cups, and several decades later, I did as well.

Right now, I'm drinking some looseleaf pu-erh, hopefully sans paint dust  (I'm working on something for my art class right now). Later, I'm considering some genmaicha or a rosemary tisane.

Essentially first generation.

I do not consider the Lipton iced tea mom made sometimes in the summer to have in any way influence my present love of tea; if anything, it provided aversive conditioning.

I started to drink the teas served in chinese restaurants when I was in college, and the co-op had always had a variety of teas around. It was only after I started drinking teas that my father, usually a coffee drinker, started to offer me the occasional cup of tea in the evening; I think he was learning about teas at that time himself, from some calligrapher friends.

Hence, 'essentially.'

Started today with an organic sencha from Yuuki-cha, and now drinking a purple bud Haiwan puerh.

Both of my parents drink copious amounts of bagged tea on a daily basis. Usually Lipton, Red Rose or Tetley. If you added it up, they probably drink more volume than I do :P My grandmother on my mothers side was the same way.

Sort of. We always had teabags around, but it was more of a thing to offer to company, or have when you were ill. My mother's really a coffee person who occasionally drinks some tea.

Assam Melody tonight--it's been an exhausting couple of days.

Yes. My family drinks tea, though I think I am the first to dive in this deep. My father enjoyed loose leaf in the past and still loves his Earl Grey, which is the only tea I can get him to drink as loose leaf instead of bags. His father is also a tea drinker. My mother's side is all about coffee though.

Currently in my cup is Yuuki-cha's Magokoro. For an organic, it's pretty potent.

Hi Kitteh! :) Speaking of organics, have you had Yuuki Yutaka this year? Is it good? I just ordered that along with the deep steamed kabusecha from yuuki-cha. Just a little something to sip until SHINCHA time. w00t.

Hi Ed! And yes, I've had the Yuuki Yutaka. My tasting notes says that it requires roughly 2 tsp of leaf for 5 to 6 ounces of water to get a good flavor. It was mild for a fukamushi. The main flavors that I got from it were grassy, sweet, tangy but subtle. I found that the Magokoro has a better kick to it, but the Yuuki Yutaka was decent.
