Help me: I need a sheng puerh tea cake with smoked taste.

I gave as present to her some sheng cakes that I love (one of my favourite is Xiaguan Ancient Wild tree) but she said me that it has no sufficient smoke taste for her.

I have now a sample of Xiaguan Ancient wild tree 2005 cake from Yunnan Sourcing. In my opinion this tea has enourmous amounts of smokiness. Well, it seems it has nothing else but smokiness. And because of that I don't like it at all This is funny how different people have different taste

It's not so romantic... I want to find the perfect cake for her because she pay me for this work.
(But, unfortunatly, I can't try al the puerh cakes of China...)

Yes, it's true: different people, different taste. This evening I wan to try again a cup of my cake Xiaguan Ancient Wild Tree because I didn't remember any smoke taste... but probably I'm doing a mistake...

In general, for me, it's not very good to try a little sample (in particular the samples of YS) because we spent a lot of money for a little quantity of tea and often the sample hasn't really the same taste of the complete cake. I'm not sure for what reason. ( And also I don't like the little plastic bags that YS use to wrap the samples!).

In the last period I tried the samples of the peacock Menghai collection (also from YS) and I didn't like it. I would be curious to try the complete cakes...

I really hope that your cake is much better than my sample! Because mine really smells like lapsang souchong! And I think you are right -- a sample can taste different from a whole cake. And it's because they probably are from different production batches or something like that. It seems that quality isn't constant at all in pu-erh market. A mistake in the production process can ruine the whole batch of cakes.
Samples are expensive for sure, but to me it's better to pay more for a sample and then choose a good cake than to have a big 400g cake and can't drink it. Also when we buy a sample and a cake from the same vendor there is a (small maybe) probability that they are from the same batch so we can judge the quality.
Another big question is if a particular vendor sells genuine cakes from the factory. But it's another story.
Anyway, enjoy the pu-erh you drink and let the good quality be with you
