BYOT! Enter TeaChat here, you never know what you may find!

What do you think I actually did with those two broken Kyusu from yesterday? First correct guess gets a "prize." So what did I do? Details may win a consolation prize! Pictures to come.

Time to bury these in the garden, Japanese style.

Tah dah ... from this ...

... to this. If you answered EXTREME measures (Geeber), you win!!!

First step was with JB Weld per the Yixing topic, then Boy Scout lashing skillz, though I will redo with longer pieces of hemp twine. Perhaps the next question is, will it hold up to brewing?

Well, tbh, there was no way I was going to just trust the JB Weld, plus it got a wee bit unsightly. Heh ...

But yeah, looks a bit snazzy and has the added insurance.

Still, will they brew?

Chip,

If you don't mind the addition..... maybe add a piece of wooden dowel inside the handle in the one with the break of the narrow section with a liberal appliction of JBWeld.

best,

..............john

That looks good, Chip! If you didn't know they had been repaired, you would think that the handles were supposed to be like that. It will be interesting to hear how it holds up.

So, what did I win? A cruise? A new car? A tea bag? :D

I was just thinking the same basic idea: take a small stainless steel plate--a 'mending plate'?, maybe 1/4 inch by 1 inch--and carefully bend it to match the handle curve. Bind that with your twine to the handle. The curve might be a better support, and less alteration to the handle function than a straight dowl. Would do that without welding first, to check angles & aesthetics.

Nice fix Chip! :D

You came up with a solution which works aesthetically as well as structurally. Another thought on the reinforcing might be to add a little bondo filling inside the handle which would add strength. Be mindful of the balance however if you do so......

Best,
R

Yeah, thanks for the input, everyone!!!

I was concerned a lot about balance. I don't want kyusu-s prone to tipping over. The balance with the Kikumaru (cream colored one) is quite delicate due to the over all lighter weight, and this one is most prone to snapping off I think.

So, I had considered inserting something inside and/or coating liberally with the JB Weld. I think whatever I do has to be super light. Ha, maybe a titanium or carbon fiber insert

Geeber, your prize is a lifetime supply of GREEN tea! Which is about zero right now. JK, I will be in touch about the prize. I want it to be something you will use.

I would certainly appreciate the GREEN much more if I had a lifetime supply. And probably develop the patience and technique to brew it correctly!
