I don't know! When it comes to Japanese teas, I mostly stick to genmaicha and hojicha.

And now I want genmaicha.

Uji for Tsuri Jiru Shi and Tenka Ichi Gyokuro, Ujibashi san no ma and Kaboku sencha, Manten, Wakamatsu and Ummon no mukashi matcha.
But the prefecture isn't very important as long as the tea is good.

Ippoen gyokuro this evening.

Kagoshima was my choice, but Uji in the cup to begin the TD!

Maybe some Kagoshima later ...

One of my favorites besides Uji is a single estate tea from Nagano
Prefecture - named for the nearby Tenryu river.

But Ippodo Sencha Kaboku is my Uji staple.

I seem to remember from one of my children's school textbooks that Nara has the second highest tea production, next to Kagoshima, in Japan. I was surprised because that isn't what you usually think. If I can find it again I will post it.
Dave

A search on Yahoo.jp says Shizuoka is #1. If I find the graph from the textbook I will post it.

The whole region of Japan. I don't have much experience with Japanese teas but my favorite region would have to be Shizuoka because my favorite Fukamushi comes from there.

No tea today or for the past week :( because I just transfered to Columbus ohio and moved there this past week and my tea is still back home. Im going back this weekend so hopefully I will be able to pack some up here.

I voted Kagoshima since I like their Yutaka Midori so much, but the only other sencha I've had that I know which region it came from was Uji (and that one is pretty darn good as well!) Still a bit young in my tea trying days.

Thanks togei. Everything I had heard was Shizuoka reigns supreme in volume. Of course there are prefecture marketing strategies at work here, and every prefecture seems to tout some claim to fame.

TD continued with great tea. More new sencha earlier and currently Mansai sheng pu-erh from Essence of Tea with the Mrs.

A couple of OTTI are coming together, the TeaShirts, and a Hagi SOP ... quite a day!

Uji all the way! I love gyokuro with a passion.

Rose congou this afternoon, followed by a lot of post-workout iced green tea. Currently drinking some amazing hojicha. Yum!

Chip wrote:... did you know that Zencha will be offering Kagoshima leaf w/i a few months! This is a case in point of the rise in demand for Kago leaf. 4 years ago when I asked them if they would offer Kagoshima, they discounted the notion, now they are gung ho! Don't tell anyone!
You're secret is safe with me!

I wonder if their Kagoshima offering will reflect Zencha's house style? Their Organic Uji Superior surprised me because it wasn't lean like other Uji teas, rather it was bigger bodied and tender, with flavors that I can't describe because my memory of them is just out of reach. But thinking of this delicious tea is making my mouth water, so there might be more Uji Superior in my immediate future.
