you know that divot under the cake? is that there to tuck in all the loose the wrapper so it can lay flat? seems like it was designed to do just that!

It is from when the cake was being pressed.
They wrap the leaves in cheesecloth, twist it into a knot, and press it between stone (traditionally). The divot is where the knot was. It also does make a convenient place to stuff all the extra wrapper
