That's exactly how I have been thinking lately. Though my tea spending is on hold so I can afford to buy my family and friends gifts for the holidays. I was saying just earlier today to my wife that I have decided to disown all my family and friends next year so I don't have to have two months of NO tea spending. The sad part is, she knows I was kind of serious...

My car not starting this morning turned into $375 down the drain for a new battery and alternator.

One of my first thoughts... "Well, I guess I'm not buying any tea or pots for a while."
Self-restraint by necessity; Life's way of teaching me to appreciate what I already have.

I put everything like this on a 30 day wait list. If I still want it after 30 days I'll buy. 95% of stuff doesn't last on the list for 30 days though. The stuff that does is awesome stuff I really need and enjoy. Before I was buying stuff left right and centre and I'm enjoy the stuff I have much more now.

That's an excellent standard to use. I also set a price point based on how upset I'll be if/when I break the tea ware. Disappointing expensive tea eventually disappears or ages out of the tea cabinet, but the tea ware rejects would just sit there frowning at me.

The problem with the 30 day wait is that vendors like Hojo offer many one-of-a-kinds that may not still be there when you decide you really do want it. I usually purchase these items as soon as I see them posted, but I do use your "wait list" system for purchases of items that if sold out, will most likely be restocked. When I purchased my first kyusu from Hojo yesterday, once I received confirmation I discarded quite a few other intended purchases from my want list. I am glad that I waited before purchasing these items. Next month I may look at them again, or maybe just buy a second kyusu from Hojo! Maybe a 50ml shigaraki?

I don't make a wish list, because I find that it get way too long! Without a wish list, I tend to forget some items, and the ones I really would want, I don't forget about, so when I have some extra cash, I pick them up. With a wish list I find I buy too much.

Heh, I do the wait list thing for more pricey items for that reason. I figure if the fates don't want me to have it, someone else will buy it first. Sure, that means missing some things I want, but it also keeps me in my budget.
Granted, that doesn't mean the rule doesn't occasionally get broken for the more 'love at first sight' items.

That just becomes another excuse for impulse buying for me.

+1 on that !
But you can always apply the opposite:
"I will buy this unique piece, it´s exactly what i need/like/wish, but what if I will break it accidentally someday? The later the worst, it will be irreplaceable anyway. Could you deal with that?"

Well so be it. For me its all just ways of thinking myself in to buying more stuff I dont really need. I love having great pieces of tea ware (I dont have much at all these days) don't get me wrong - but I dont need any more as I dont want to collect teaware and the constant search for the new was detracting me from truly enjoying and being grateful for the lovely pieces I have and the wonderful tea I drink.
I'm a little bit of a minimalist though so its just my way. I certainly wouldn't suggest others to do the same, Its all about personal preference. And I love looking at everyones purchases!

There's much truth in what you say. I do find that I enjoy tea more if I have a decent selection of teaware to brew it in. However, this can get ridiculous after a while when we accumulate too much and there's no shelf space left for non-essentials like food! Or when you can't eat at the table because it's covered with excessive teaware purchases. I've been trying to control this habit, but with very little success!

So I ended up buying two more teapots. Now I will have to try and figure out some tea to brew in them.
