Woah, that's extremely cool! I've seen it in other pieces, and I had heard something about straw, but that's really nifty!

I've got a side-shot of the mizusashi over here. I'll try to get some better pictures of the bottom after I finish the cornstarch treatment (I decided to do a cold run and leave it over a day).

I have also similar experience with japanese hagi yunomi. The piece is truly beautiful with natural cracks all over the glaze on the surface. However it has many leaks due to this effect. You may have a look at its surface texture.

I've tried everything starting from japanese traditional method such fill the piece up with warm but highly viscous rice porridge and seaweed; leaving it a day or two and dried it up for a day or two.
Upon pouring warm tea into it, the piece started to leak again. The whole process was repeated 4x and at the end I gave up. As the piece is very nice one, I keep it only for aesthetic purpose, nothing functional.

Heh, must be a Biwa, aka loquat ... Shibuya Deishi?

Have you tried the cornstarch method? One I purchsed leaked like a river, the cornstarch worked completely. Later on, I had to resoak it and redo it, and it still has not leaked.

Exactly! Can't escape from your "hagi-radar-eyes", chip

After several sessions of cornstarch treatment suggested by Chip:

Now this yunomi serves its main purpose :)

I'm new to tea and new to hagi. I've heard mention of Chip's cornstarch cure in many posts. Would someone kindly post a link to the instructions? I've looked and looked without success.
I boiled some cornstarch (1 tbs to 16 oz water, as posted) and soaked my piece for 6 hours. Do you then rinse off the cornstarch or do you let it dry and then rinse it after some time has passed? Does the cornstarch slurry harden if left to dry on the piece?
Thanks! Please excuse my ignorance. (This is my first post. I'm not even sure I"m posting in the right place) :-)

Hm, perhaps a new topic just on this subject would be helpful ... the one stop corn starch treatment topic!

Making it so.
