Re: Wednesday TeaDay 2/9/11 Botched brew, what to do?
Chip, I think you jinxed my teaDay today! I was prepping a thermos of a Taiwanese oolong and overbrewed one of the infusions, so much so that I had to pour some back out, and dilute with extra hot water, but that made a quite delightful brew, just a little more of it than I planned. Hadn't expect the leaves to have quite so much bitterness in them.

Botched brew--is there such a thing? Kidding, just in denial that I ever botch a brew. Usually I'll drink something if it is a tad overbrewed. If nobody is looking, I might dilute it with more water. If the water was too cool to begin with, I drink it. Sometimes interesting layers of flavors come out when tea is brewed with cooler than recommended water temp. Example: a good silver needle may express creaminess when brewed with water just warm enough to touch.
A roasty, fruity monkey picked Tiekuanyin from Samovar Tea Lounge today. NOT overbrewed, underbrewed, or "botched" today!

I'll try to dilute it and/or drink it. I've only ever tossed some once that was far too poorly brewed to stand.

I drink it as is if I botch up the brew. Its my fault for not getting it right and so its my right to have to drink it.
This late afternoon Organic Shizuoka Sencha Sayamakaori from Yuuki-Cha. I'm not sure how to upload pictures properly... oh well.

If it's overbrewed,I toss it - leaves and all. I do however have a very forgiving definition of "overbrewed".

I try to redeem it by adding water and maybe some sweetener if it's become unpalatably bitter. If I still can't stomach it, I hold my nose and drink.

I'll drink it if I buy the tea. If the tea is a free sample, I will probably toss it if the tea becomes too bitter.
Only had Den's organic matcha in the morning today.

I feel in the minority here, I usually toss it and try again. It doesn't happen often though but when it does I leave it brewing for WAY too long. Ick!
Re: Wednesday TeaDay 2/9/11 Botched brew, what to do?
Seems that most folks here have a different understanding of a botched brew.
Upon reading I get the idea that not hitting the center of the target is "botched" for some ones - I think more of not hitting the target at all.
Then I take a sip - make a "funny" face
- and toss it.
Doing better next time
And I even already managed to ruin all further infusions with a really botched brew.

When a batch of tea is a too strong for my taste, I add a bit of hot water to it and... give it to my mom. She likes tea that screws up the insides of your mouth. If it's green tea (which she doesn't like drinking much), she'll dip a cotton ball in it and lave it all over her face.
Instant toner.
I mess up a lot with puerh.
I use the liquid to give some my yixing pots a bath.
The wet leaves I sometimes give to our toddler, which he pushes around in a bowl with a plastic spoon. He likes to pretend he's cooking a yummy soup.

I drink it down really fast and try to make another brew. If that doesn't work out, I just wash may face with it!
