Re: Big gaiwan
Thanks for all the rapid feedback. You're right, obviously a big gaiwan would be too clumsy and hot to handle unless it had a handle. I may get one of those cups but I'll probably break down and get a Xishing pot.
Re: Big gaiwan
Actually...I'm looking for a "taller" gaiwan. When I was in China, I saw them everywhere. I have an extensive collection of teaware, but my gaiwans are lacking. I've also noted that I'd like to have more space between my leaves and my lip, so to speak, when using my brewing gaiwan to also drink from. My collection are rather short and on the small size. Anyone have ideas? What a spirited conversation here. I didn't want to make an entirely new thread, so jumped in on this one. Be gentle, though...bwahahaha

Even better than a gaiwan...
Just put the tea leaves in your mouth and pour in the hot water. There's no hassle of having to clean any wares.

Although bsteele's rec's were witty and much appreciated for the visual it sparked in my mind....I'm still looking for a taller gaiwan in the event anyone runs across one or has one they want to rid themselves of.rjiwrth wrote: I love it. Precisely what I was looking for!

Re: Big gaiwan
I just let my bigger (150mL) gaiwan slip last night while brewing some oolong tea with water at 205 degrees, and only luck and reflexes saved me from a nasty burn. I've never been really comfortable with the larger size, and this was a good reminder why. And I don't have particularly small or weak hands.
But I've seen quite a few deeper items that are somewhere between a houhin and a gaiwan that appear designed for more ease of manipulation despite larger size, like these
