What device for warming water?

Had many metal kettles, hated all of them. i use a glass one, never been happier

Old-timers sometimes boil water in yixing pots over open fire/heating element,

They do that because it gives excellent water.

For convenience i don't boil it on charcoal, but on an alcohol flame. It takes a bit longer, but is worth it.

Alcohol frame boiling water with Yixing gives excellent water?

Stove, alcohol burner inside, kettle above. Just use a pot small enough, or if a bigger pot - don't fill it with too much water, so it won't take too long.

Yes. Lots of people boil their water this way in China, Malaysia and Thailand.

Charcoal is better though.

Using Yixing as kettle?

Yes.

Several years ago, for example, somebody in Malaysia has discovered a huge old stock of very large ROC Yixing pots, in several sizes - from very large (several liters) to small enough for home use (maybe half a liter or a bit more volume). As they were neither artist's pieces, nor of a size that anyone would brew tea in they were sold for very reasonable prices, and are used by many people as kettles.
There are some tea shops in KL's Chinatown where you can see those pots used as kettles. For reasons of time in the shops they preheat the water though in electric kettles, and only keep the water heated over alcohol flames.

IfI understood from the various answers and trying to compare with a photographic analogy.

The clay kettle is blurring the image and the ironcast Kettle is sharpening the image, is that correct?

Try Lin`s ceramic kettle, I own a tetsubin and a Lin`s studio kettle, I think ceramic is the best for greener oolong, and the tetsubin does a better job with aged and darker oolong (like Yancha) but lately I heat my water untill it boils in an induction kettle, after that I pour it in my ceramic kettle and put it on an electric burner, and I take it down inbetween the fillups of the teapot so that it does not overboil.



This is my KJ teatable, it has a copper electric burner that keeps the kettle hot.
