The staples alone don't seem like they would keep the pots watertight, but they must obviously work... does anyone know more details?

If made out of 14K gold perhaps...
In Asia, the chances are they use 22k gold. I wonder if there is any adhesive involved along with the stapling. And, I wonder if the staples go through the pot to the other side or just into the body?
I have one, and yes there is an adhesive attached in. But over time I find they are being getting rid of.

Mine is done on the lid, so stapling is done along the inner line *of the lid's teeth (or wall), to avoid from a trouble when closing the lid. The stapling has quite a long history in China, usually done on old porcelains and antiques, but it seems doing on Yixings is also successful.

I heard most of the time, they are made of bronze and quite pricey than they look.

Wow, this is so cool! It's interesting to compare the lines of staples of this method that draw attention away from the cracks (although it's still obvious that there is a repair) in the piece to kintsugi which by design highlights the cracks, at the same time implying that it's an intentional feature of the work rather than a repair...

I think yes and no. Otherwise even with expert clamping there would be leaking (except with the cleanest breaks).
