I originally thought these were larger than they are and that made me really confused since I thought the large caddies (for storing whole cakes) were a new thing.
Small caddies do have a longer history, but I'm having trouble finding much.
And as you point out it can be faked.
I kind of want this to be real. Maybe that's why I can't leave it alone.

I haven't seen this type of clay used before nixing clay is lovely. I got to see some in person for the first time this weekend. (thanks to a visit to orchid teahouse) I definitely want a teapot ... Have you tried these caddies?

Jianshui is nice. I like brewing puerh in Jianshui teapots. I appreciate that Jianshui clay comes from the same hills that puerh tea is grown in. I feel there is a synergistic connection there. I've seen the caddies for sale, but have never bought or used one. I imagine they would perform the same as Yixing. I don't see why they wouldn't.

I also think that many different clay teapots from all around the world can be used to brew Puerh. One of my favorites is a Japanese Bankoyaki kyusu that seems to do a superlative job with this tea compared to most other teapots that I have. I also use unglazed porcelain Korean teapots that are also excellent and seem to outperform some of the Yixing pots that I have.

I've seen that as well, shipping isn't too bad either, very intriguing!
I can see myself getting some in the near future!

That would work out to $46.66 per cake. I doubt very much you could buy good cakes from that period for that price. But, point taken about buying many cakes.

Agreed... In this hypothetical situation I'd take the middle route between one expensive bing and 300 cheap bings and shoot for 3 to 5 tongs of some exceptional tea circa early 90's to early 00's

nothing exceptional, but you can get some solid stuff if you search around.
