If it's glass, by all means... Actually a shatter-resistant glass thermos would be a great idea, made out of wind-shield material or something...Victoria wrote:I think tenuki said his is glass. Like this one on Amazon:

I LOVE it! It feels less fragile than I was expecting. My design is a sailboat etched in the glass on the inside layer.
The customer service there is just outstanding. I am very pleased.

I love my Piao-I infuser, which I use at work, but I'm a little worried now about putting boiling water in polycarbonate. BPA seems to have a lot of potentially nasty effects on the human body.
How about the rest of you? Anyone else out there stopped using their beloved Piao-I, Kamjove or Ingenuitea infuser?

I stopped using the IngenuiTEA. But I'm wondering if the leeching is a continual process, witth the polycarbs or if it is worse when they are new.

This post about BPA in the AeroPress coffee maker may be of some interest to folks here. It's from the Aerobie people, but I think it seems honest and straightforward and I for one find it reassuring. I'd like to see if I can get hot water run through my Piao-I tested for BPA.
Thanks for the link. That would seem to indicate it is less and less over time.

I plan on ordering from Klean Kanteen to replace my Nalgene bottles.
http://www.kleankanteen.com/
Also, I called Nalgene and asked about getting BPA free bottles, they gave me a sales pitch about their new BPA free line, but will not do any returns/refunds/replacements. Sad they are going to lose a customer over 3 cheap bottles.

Well I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. I just recycled my old polycarbonate bottle and bought 4 of the new Nalgene Eastman Tritan copolyester (non-BPA) bottles. The seem great so far, bright and colorful, similar to the Polycarbonate, but a bit more flexible. I've liked Nalgene over other manufacturers, so I am sticking with them. I love the flip-top design on the 24 ounce bottles too.rhpot1991 wrote:I plan on ordering from Klean Kanteen to replace my Nalgene bottles.

It's All About the Sigg!
I am all about the Sigg bottles...I ditched my Nalgenes about 6 months ago due to the BPA and also the fact that Nalgene as a company produces cages and restraints for lab animals. Boo, hiss! Sure, if there is a market for it then no doubt a company will create the product, but since there are numerous alternatives, then why not make the choice? Siggs are also great because they have a coating inside that keeps it from retaining the scent or flavor from juice, coffee, tea, etc.

So I presume you do not use any drugs/medical treatments or cosmetics that have ever been tested on lab animals, then?FoolongChoo wrote:...I ditched my Nalgenes about 6 months ago due to the BPA and also the fact that Nalgene as a company produces cages and restraints for lab animals. Boo, hiss!

I am detecting a hint of snarkiness to your reply, but yes, that is correct...I don't take any medications, and I definitely use all cruelty-free cosmetics and skin care products, as well as products that don't contain carcinogenic and/or hormone disrupting chemicals like formaldehyde and parabens. At least I am making a conscious decision about it. One step at a time!

Actually, when I worked as the bio diversity lab assistant during my undergrad, I got to spend a lot of time in the "subject" room hanging with the mice, rats, baby iguanas (so cute!), bunnies (sickly vicious), and zebrafish. We had a lot of Nalgene cages and they were very nice. Very easy to keep clean and healthy. I've seen much worse products sold for home use in pet stores.FoolongChoo wrote:and also the fact that Nalgene as a company produces cages and restraints for lab animals. Boo, hiss!
Just saying.
Re: It's All About the Sigg!
Thanks for the info FoolongChoo. I too try to buy from companies that do not test on animals or use animal ingredients .scruffmcgruff wrote:So I presume you do not use any drugs/medical treatments or cosmetics that have ever been tested on lab animals, then?FoolongChoo wrote:...I ditched my Nalgenes about 6 months ago due to the BPA and also the fact that Nalgene as a company produces cages and restraints for lab animals. Most mass-market soaps like Dove, Ivory, etc are made from beef tallow, a slaughterhouse byproduct. Also glycerin used in shaving cream, toothpaste, etc is often animal-byproduct-derived. A lovely thought, slathering slaughtered-cow-fat all over ones' body in the shower every day. Not to mention shaving and brushing ones' teeth with the stuff...

Tom's of Maine's entire line uses 100% plant-derived ingredients and does not test on animals. Also, Whole Foods offers a decent selection of non-animal-tested personal care products.
I also use Kiehl's, which is supposedly not tested on animals. Of course they were acquired by L'Oreal, which does test on animals in most of its divisions. And one could argue that buying Tom's of Maine products from Whole Foods is bad because they sell meat...
Unfortunately in this society it may not be possible to avoid animal-tested products completely, but I do what I can and each of our actions and purchases has the potential either to increase or decrease suffering of other sentient beings on this planet, so one certainly can make a difference.
