And if he still doesn't, tell him you fed it to a stray dog in baggies, he can go look in dog scat for it! (Scat is the scientific word for animal droppings)

I'm pretty sure hitting your roommate with it for about an hour or so while saying 'you must now buy me a new one' would clean it nicely.

I am glad I am not the only one thinking some pretty morbid thoughts when it comes to this room mate. Do you have access to a chipper, though that won't solve your problem, it could be theraputic.

If the excellent cleaning solutions offered fail to resolve the situation, post a picture of the kettle for me, and I'll see if I can find you one here in Taiwan (there are several styles that are very common, and not at all expensive).

Do let us know how it turns out, if only so that we can suggest more ways to torture your roommate.

hey thanks everyone, i used a half vinegar and water solution and let it boil and then sit hot two different times. i managed to remove some more of the black stuff and rinsed and boiled some more and now even the biggest sniff when the kettle is at room temperature doesn't smell like the horrible burnt milk. but upon making tea i can taste what is either a little of the burnt taste or kind of a copper penny taste (probably due to scraping element) as an undertone. im going to try to take it apart myself tomorrow and see for myself but it looks like new kettle time.

Did the roommate from Hades er...move out without leaving a forwarding address yet?
BTW, pigs will eat pretty much whatever you put in front of them, including bones. Just thought you'd like to know.
Also, I just remembered an episode of Twilight Zone in which a woman clubbed her husband to death using a frozen leg of lamb, which she then cooked and served the officers on the scene. Unfortunately the price of lamb now would put a 5 pound bone in leg of lamb about the price of a good kettle. Sigh. Lamb is one of the things which would bring me out of vegetarianism. I used to make the most exquisite cassoulette of lamb and lentils.
Crazy the things you think of in the middle of the night.

Just in case you need a replacement, and you were wondering where you could find one:

(I'm sure there are others available out there - this one sounded like what you have)

I like the citric acid solution also. After doing your various other mean nasties, try using a citric acid solution to clean up the remnants. It's odorless / mostly tasteless, so it should clear up any lingerers. I used CLR before, but it took a lot of flushing to clear out and made me a little nervous... We have very hard water here, so vinegar / lemon juice weren't very helpful (lemon juice was better though).
And Chip's chipper idea??? Yikes, don't get on his bad side. Maybe safer to sell your roommates stash and buy a couple dozen kettles... unless he's into crack... then you have bigger problems my friend.

i use a stainless steel water kettle, and i accidentally left the induction plate a little too long in the office and was kept boiling for maybe a good 30 minutes before i noticed it. there was still lots of water inside, but i noticed some white dots on the surface of the kettle... the kettle is a german brand, i would say that the stainless steel used is a nice quality one with thick and heavy structure, the base is similar to those "signature" pans with a thick base, my only problem is that because i chose aesthetics over function, the kettle's only opening is the spout which is about an inch or more only in diameter, i can still put a scrub and use a chopstick to clean though, but its a bit tough....
what are these white spots and how do i get rid of them?
is the kettle still safe to use?

just to follow up: i ended up buying a new kettle (i managed to eek one of the same from puerhshop even though they took them off their website). for the record the vinegar/water solution worked very well to get all the burnt milk taste out but i think that in trying to scrape off the black stuff my roommate scratched off too much of the stainless steel and got to what he said was copper underneath on the element. the water tasted like i'd gotten it from a fountain full of pennies, really metallic.
