Though I am waiting on my very first shipment of tea and tea ware, I've been abducting as much teafo(tea+info) as I can. I came across this chabako and posted a link in a thread I made yesterday.

This description is from their site:

It is a Japanese cha (tea) bako (box). It is made of Japanese cedar (which keeps bugs out) and is completely lined in tin to keep things inside fresh. The boxes were used to transport tea from distributors to the tea shops. There are at least 15 different sizes so depending on the size of the shop & the number of different types of tea they carried, they had a variety to choose from.

phantom- that's REAlly unusual!

Here's my fave. I put a funny little sticker on the top to indicate that this tin has "the good stuff" in it. The sticker is of a little man in a teacup with a tea leaf on his head! :D

Phantom: What's disappointing is that I haven't been able to find an non upholstered chabako yet. I've been searching for quite some time too.

The first website in a google search for chabako comes up with an 'order a custom chabako' type thing. I wonder if you could ask them to make you one unupholstered.

EDIT: or here http://cherry-blossom-designs.com/

I've talked to the custom order chabako people before and they wouldn't sell me a plain box.

I haven't seen the cherry blossom designs people before though, but i'm wondering what that is along the edges of the box. It looks like theirs have tape on them. It unfortunately looks like the cherry blossom pricing is for the papered chabako. I'll email them though to see if they'll sell them unpapered.

I have many tea canisters but my favorite one is this wooden canister which I use for sencha or gyokuro.

I actually have just ordered a second one.

Kaboku sencha (Ippodo) in a few minutes.

On the other hand, this gyokuro is so precious they have set a dragon to guard it.

Sal, I love the photo, but especially love the tray it's on. I noticed it yesterday and am glad to see it today. Can you tell us more about it?

I don't have any goofy or special tins of any kind. I have a collection of old-fashioned advertising type tins, but nothing that I would ever store tea in. Guess I'll have to get crackin' on that!

This morning I had Nilgiri Blue from Tao of Tea, courtesy of Victoria. Good stuff!

Now at work, Irish Breakfast, brewed at my newly installed "tea center" by my desk. (photo to come in the tea at work thread)

It is just a dish that my daughter made, but I kind of like it.

Well, it's very pretty, and more special because she made it for you! If she ever wants to make another one and sell it ...

Anyone who has been here a while Knows I have an Asian tea canister fetish, but before that, when I could not even imagine all the Asian ones never having seen them, I also collected almost any tea tin. I have several antiques, some retros, an Indian pinkish elephant that came with Darjeeling ... to name a few.

I have a bunch of Chinese tins and more recently, Japanese. So many of these are "special" and unusual to mainsteam America. I display many of them with my teawares, having tooo many to actually use since I actually have relatively little tea open at any time. My favorites are the Japanese ones.

At any rate, I will likely be like a child in a candy store today, you've been warned.

Started the day with Sencha Premier from Adagio. Sweetie likes it. Fortunately, Wulong, Gandalf, Ceylon, and TEAh did not or there would be none for me.
