I voted floral, but there are some qualifications. I am more intrigued by something floral, but I can't get behind bright patterns. I tend to gravitate towards floral patters that are either a single color or a muted pattern. If that makes sense.
Rushka in my cup today - a Russian-style EG. I totally missed out on getting my sencha last night. I was home, checked my email, then cuddled up with a kitty and napped until it was time to go to bed. I am still craving some sencha, but at least I am well rested.

OTHER: I must have a manly motif or none at all on my teaware! I live a bachelor life and it would not fit otherwise. I mean would Rice really fit with my loud couch (for those that have seen it in livechat)?
Been super stressed and super busy so first post in teaday in a bit. Nothing in my cup right now but its still going to be a looong day.

I could totally go for a nap right now. I'm practically dead on my feet today.auggy wrote: I totally missed out on getting my sencha last night. This question is hard to answer. Where kyuusu and most other teapots are concerned, I prefer them plain. Most of my yunomi are either plain or sometsuke (blue-and-white) porcelain - with a few more colourful exceptions. Chawan-s for matcha are all over the map... quite a few are wabi-plain, while I have lots of others with designs - some subtle, some not so much.
Chip, you might try tweaking this poll to ask in future:
What is the motif on your favourite tea item? (which is a slightly different question)
What is your favourite motif for season X (e.g. wintertime)? - good question because Japanese wares in particular are often very seasonally themed.*
There are different shades of plain. What are your favourite styles of plain teawares, and why?
__________
*P.S. I like snow rabbits...

Thanks for the ideas, Chamekke!
Interesting that so many of you do not have a favorite motif, I did not expect that. If you have been around me long enough, you know Momiji, Japanese maple reigns supreme for Japanese teaware, though I do not have any cups with Momiji ... yet.
Chinese teaware, most likely Chinese dragons I have some Yixing and gaiwan with dragons.
Beyond this, bamboo, fish are nice too, but I like a lot of different designs, to no design at all!
Started the day with Fukamushi. Present was Sweetie, Gandalf, and Pyrit ...all becoming regulars. I am about due for my next tea.

My current fave Japanese motifs include:
momiji a.k.a. kaede (Japanese maple)
fukiyose (autumn leaves scattered by the wind)
nami-chidori (plovers and waves)
take-suzume (sparrows among the bamboo)
itomaki (traditional Japanese spools)
tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog, sometimes mistranslated as badger - not commonly found on teawares however, nor on women's attire)
...plus some others that aren't coming to mind at the moment.

P.S. For those who like Japanese art, the Canon Japan website has a selection of chiyogami paper designs that you can download and print to a colour printer. Makes wonderful and distinctive holiday wrapping!
