Yes, the smaller amount is right: it's not like yan cha where more is almost always better. Other teas do come from the Phoenix (Feng Huang) Mountain area, but Dan Cong is the most well known. Actually, I think Shui Xian originated in the Feng Huang area before hitting the big time in Wuyi. There is still a fair amount of Shui Xian produced there today.Bubba_tea wrote: I filled my gaiwan about 1/2 full the first time around, and did 15 sec steeps. 2nd time I did 3gms / 5 oz and it's much better. It's labled Phoenix Oolong, but I assume it's Dan Cong based on the leaves.
"Dan Cong" means single bush, so it is possible that your sample is tea mixed from several bushes (as is most tea!) so the producers may have been making an effort to be scrupulously honest by not using the term "Dan Cong." Only the very most expensive DC is actually from just one bush. Who's the vendor?
Did you see a recent post on DC names?

Course, Imen has gotten a reputation as Queen Dan Cong in the US.

Even Imen used to say that one of the Wing Hop Fung (& by extension, Bird Pick) Dan Congs is pretty damn good @ $40/lb or so. I forget which one, though. I've had it and it's not bad, especially at that price. The rest I've had from there are not so good.
