Den's sample tea of the month is Green Kukicha... I think I like it better than the roasted variety.

Kukicha (green) is one of my favorites greens :) I haven't explored many vendors/brands though.

I have only had the Den's Green Kukicha, but I definitely like it.

Chip wrote:Kukicha rox! I do not always have a bag open, but maybe half the time. I prefer the green, but sometimes roast my own instead of buying houji kukicha. I enjoy the Den;s, but found Hibiki-an's to be the best ... however I have not ordered from H-A in almost a year and did not have their 2008 harvest.

Also, kuki is great for blending, adding a different dimension to other Japanese teas and "grain teas."
I'm ordering some Ummon-no-Mukashi from Ippodo and wondered if anyone had recommendations for Bancha and/or Senca from Ippodo? I looked and didn't see kukicha there, so that will be next from another vendor.

cloudy kukicha?

by fmoreira272 » Apr 26th, '09, 13:52

just had my first kukicha from den's sample. i agree with previous posting, its a very easy yummy tea. but from den's description it says it should have a green transparent color. i noticed my cup is kind cloudy. it does becomes more clear as the "powder" settles on the bottom. is it normal or did i get a sample not so fresh?

Mine always comes out a transparent pale green. I had my first bag around for a long time and the taste of the brewed tea changed but not the appearance. Are you using green kukicha or the roasted houji-kukicha?

I was inspired to go downstairs and brew a cup of Den's Green Kukicha to provide a photo of my results:

The tea would look greener if I had a tea cup with a pure white glaze but I'm currently experimenting with a pearl glaze that has hints of cream and tan.

I went to Hibiki-an to order some kuckicha and couldn't find it. Guess I have to buy it after reading about the sea breeze and all. Hehe.
I want to compare it to the iri-bancha I bought from Ippodo.
