yyy. if colors are not good or they fall over in the firing. some pieces are fired on shells and 'move' during the firing. there is attrition. the more risky pieces either 'work' or they are shards.

oh yes ! i do hammer pieces immediately when i unload. i have a hammer handy ! haha ! no seconds.

sanding. yes, the wadding on the bottoms of each piece that is loaded in soda or woodfire kiln needs to be removed then wet sanded. also so it doesn't damage the tatami ! or if placed on lacquerware. i always feel each piece. touching the kuchizukuri to make sure there are no burs.

sometimes things flying around in the kiln get stuck on the piece. like furikake ! HEHE ! albeit unwanted furikake !

sometimes i hear, "wait, wait..." seconds after the sound of the smashing ! haha !

was wondering what was your loss rate on that last fire? 20% or more.

i get close to 10% but its electric fire a lot safer and more controlled you know.

i have a 5-20's tin white and want to add talc to it to try too get it to crawl but do not know were to start do you think an = amount of talc to tin or less. any input would be appreciated

since the firing process of soda has more risk, i.e. pieces fired on the side, gravity and the inability to control the glazes.

i get about 50%

regular gas cone 10 is very predictable much like electric oxidation firing. 90-99%

or more. depends how the 'kiln gods' are treating me that day

background. a little more information my day job, i'm a photographer. i work on commercial, advertising and a little editorial work. above is a project i'm working on, seasons of japan. the image above is made with a special 6 -lens pinhole camera.

since this is a ceramics area, i'll include a photograph of ceramics.

some of my handmade tools. most are from cocobolo. i cut the wood and hand shape each tool.

when i throw demonstrations or teach, i only use fingers, string, and a needle to check depth of the clay.

Beautiful cherry blossoms. It has been YEARS since I played with pinhole photography. I never produced anything remotely like that! Ha!

I've been watching Cory's photostream for probably a year, some amazing photography there - not just the ceramics. It's worth a look: One of my favorites.
