don't tell him to just start with one type. he needs to get as much as he can of as many types as he can as fast as he can then drink till he sees purple spots and decides that the one that gave him the purple spots----- its the one for him.

its the only way man....... the only way.......

purple the word for the day.

live it
be it

I think you should go for this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/2008-Menghai-Tea-Fa ... .m20.l1116

This is the simple thing from the best teafactory.

Some 25g. samples cost about 1/4 the price of a $10 400g. cake, so they are also a rip off, unless a cake costs $40 or more, there isnt much point in samples unless they are free. I am sure there are many people here who disagree with me but I know there are a few that agree.
Im agree. Lets be practical: there is a guy who knows nothing about it, if you want to teach him about pu-erh dont make it complicated. Samples wont tell you anything unless you have experience. One unexpensive bing is what one needs to find the best water and the best way to brew it...

Yes, well said, I would say pick up a Menghai ripe and raw cake, Yee has already posted a nice ripe, for raw I would recommend a 7542 or 8582.

I got my start with puerh by ordering all kinds of samples from Hou De. I was able to buy 1oz of many different teas. You can read about many of the teas on their site and there are reviews of some of them on other tea blogs. Also, since they are in Texas you get them relatively fast.

I posted a topic on here very similar to this, but deleted it after reading this one. I guess the topic "GASP!!!" threw me off, so...
Anyway, I was looking for advice on making my first REAL Pu erh purchase (besides the loose versions I had already gotten.)
Yee, thanks for making such a good suggestion, I purchased this not 5 minutes ago. I was looking for a plain tea cake, no lotus or any other flowers/herbs or anything, and this was spot on.
I can't wait to try it.
Thanks for making an excellent suggestion for a couple of n00bs! :)

well hello again.
it has taken 3 days now to get to the point i am now were i can be in another room away from the new 2 kilo macha bag. i think now that most of the purple spots are gone i have a better idea from the Kamikaze method that sounded so good at the time.
so if you are still interested read on.

1st get one of this
http://www.puerhshop.com/index.php?main ... cts_id=730

2nd get one of this
http://www.puerhshop.com/index.php?main ... cts_id=763

3rd "sort of kamikaze " brew them both at the same time withe the same type pot/water/temp etc.

*** info they are shu and sheng made by the same place at the same time for the same reason.

i think its the same leaf or at least it tastes the same. some say ---

"do drink this shu is to know were its been and to drink this sheng is to know were its going"

sort of like the chicken and egg thing with this one though.

sort of the best way to introduce a guy or girl to the Pu and gain the most knowledge about method/type/and as time goes on aging.

also you must use a sniff cup and do not think you are a fool with your nose stuck in the thing. you must keep smelling "breath in threw your nose out threw your mouth and in threw your nose. ********don't stop cuz you feel stupid*** you will get a strong change in the smell. also its best on the first drinking steep.

did anyone see that purple thin........oh....ya ....right!

gatta go
see ya.
