adam, that's a stunning piece. could you elaborate on how you choose the cup you did? his pieces are all such unique art works, i wonder how this one came to the top of your list. i am sure you are enjoying it filled, in your hands or empty, on the shelf.

I have always really wanted one of his pieces, though not all his forms are exactly to my liking. But several things came into play with my choice, I love the carved looks of his pieces ( this one definitely qualifies). Secondly I really enjoy the intense yohen effect on the his pieces. This one has both of those qualities in abundance.

The next hardest thing is to wait to find a piece available from him, that I liked, and is in my price range ( this pushed my range a bit, but was nice enough I decided to jump).

Earlier I found an wonderful grip for my hand, though it is a little hard to find. ( It might be due to the fact that I have huge hands, that this cup doesn't feel quite right in it a lot of the time.) When gripping it my pinkie finger would actually go right below the lip, with my ring and middle finger nestling into those ridges you mentioned. But it only really works with my left hand ( which is good as I mostly drink my tea with my left hand anyway).

I have wanted to post the family of Shibuya Deishi Shira Wan-s. There are 4 sizes in this collection. I know there is a 5th size, Chawan.

All are used pretty much, especially the 2 smaller sizes.

Front to back ...

Hagi SO #8 (I think). Very rough sand gives these a different look close up as the glaze adheres differently to the clay.

Inexpensive pairs of these are occasionally on Mago's ebay. Well, sometimes they can run up pretty high, but this pair was only 24.99 as I recall. My very first Hagi purchase was a good deal too. I think these are mass produced as they are sold in pairs and sans boxes of any kind. But still very nice.

A slightly larger Guinomi, I reach for these most often and are staining nicely.

Smallest Guinomi that I have seen from Deishi. I like to go to these for Gyokuro.

Are the Hagi SO still happening? I've spent the past couple days drooling over all the photos here. My larger teacups were cheapo asian supermarket purchases, but having a nice Hagi that grows with me would be really nice. There's no law about pouring tea from a Yixing into a Hagi, I hope.

Thought I'd post the fist of my Hagi ware. This one is from Yamane Seigan - I love his deep blues. It's got a nice curve in the middle, giving it a nice feel in the hands.
