Cory,

Thank you for your generous comments.

When each of these chawan arrived, I was quite struck by their size; I just didn't get how big from photos online.

So, here are a couple of pics attempting to convey a sense of scale for these two, IMHO, masterpieces:

First - the size of my hand:
Image

Second - Cory's One-is-Stunned-to-Speechlessness-it's-so-Amazing biidoro chawan with my fist inside:
Image

And Finally - Fornell's also stunningly beautiful chawan, also with my fist inside:
Image

They're Huuuuuuge! (which suits me at 6'6" tall).
:D

Hmmm. I'm still not getting a sense of scale from those shots.
So here are two more shots in attempt to convey the size of these gorgeous chawan.

Best to all.

very interesting gestures jim

glad you're enjoying your chawan !

i prefer larger matcha chawan, my hands are about 1.25 inches shorter than your hands.

interesting enough, the trend for decades is that chadogu in japan have been migrating towards more feminine sizes. mainly most tea practitioners are female with smaller hands.

one key point with otemae (serving tea), is that the teabowl "matcha chawan" is turned upside down to drain the water out into a waste water container. this step necessitates a koudai that the host needs to firmly grip with their fingers and not accidentally drop the chawan.

functionality.

Nice Seeker, thanks showing the size.
At 5' those are kinda like cereal bowls for me.
Just for reference, is that a placemat or a throw rug?
LOL

This thread is amazing! Some really beautiful pieces. I'm just now buying my first matcha with the beginner's set on o-cha.

This approach helps to convey the scale quite vividly - thanks.

Although admittedly I also keep getting a mental picture of a cat putting its head inside a paper bag

That's pretty amusing, but I have to admit, I tried it! LOL!

Interestingly, the bowls that are the best size for me are a similar fist-to-bowl ratio. Maybe we've uncovered a new scale of measurement? Kinda like "cubits."

Where it breaks down is with my Deishi Hagi and my Keawe Cory-bowl, both of which I LOVE, and both of which are considerably "roomier" for my fist. Good thing I usually put MATCHA in them instead of fists.

LOL! I put photos in "show off," but just for you, cory:

I didn't post it here because I'm still a little hacked off about the process of actually getting it in my hands, and it's not yet a "favorite." Ha!

Oh, details: woodfired "bizen" or "shigaraki" depending upon which sentence you read. I don't know what is the difference. It has a "shino-like" glaze and "all-natural ash." teehee! Half the time I can't make heads or tails of his descriptions. Must be all the "all-natural" smoke.

GG - matcha definitely better in chawan than fists!

BTW - how was it drinking matcha from your strommen? Have you bonded with it?

I have a strommen, and I think it took 1-2 weeks to arrive (I'm in Calif). This was a cpl/few months ago. I just ordered another larger sized one with a very similar glaze color palate. Here's the one I already have, roughly 3.5 x 3.5:
Image
and inside:
Image
I really like it - except it's a bit small for me. My sweetheart seems to be adopting it. So I captured a larger one very similar on ebay - roughly 3.5t x 4.2w. (BTW - be aware, IMHO, with Strommen - beneficial to check things out first - on the site the measurements for the chawan I just got are listed as roughly 3.5t x 5w, so I just know to email and ask/verify before buying. That's how I got the 4.2w. But 4.2w will, I think, work for me. My sense of Strommen is that he is ever in the streams, currents, and vortices of creativity where, perhaps, things are not so exact/logical/linear? I don't know though, I've never met him)

Anyway, I'm prepared to be patient. I hope it arrives sooner than later, but I have my Lum Keawe Dragon's Eye, and my Fornell Snow Leopard (that's sort of how I think of it).
And also there's the Pagasari for when I'm feeling daring.
Best,
and Cheers.
Now, on to morning matcha!

Ohhhhhh no! The red one I was looking at???
I thought I would get red to be different.
I guess you beat me to it.

I wrote to him and asked that he re-check dimensions and he
gave me new ones, but they still are wrong. I can see that it is
taller than it is wide. Hummm.

Oh yes, snow leopard - I like that. I was trying to think what it
reminded me of. Also like a Doolittle painting. :)
