I don't know if it is ever pointless to use our highly evolved brain to think deeply, discuss respectfully and appreciate immensely the myriad complexities of our world. Whether it be the heavens or what's in a teacup.

Rdl, i'm sorry for my remark. I shouldn't have said anything. Bad moment in time for me, and these kind of discussions always end up with a certain artist being downgraded depending on someone's taste, which i don't like.

A newly acquired Hagiyaki.
I purposely didn't include the potter's name, as I was very surprised to find this made by him. I was curious the thoughts of others who, as I, may not have recognized this glaze coming from this potter. Any guesses?

I am guessing it is 渋谷英一. No clue how its read.

I know cause I noticed those on this site (see link below). Didn't realize they are hagi. I kinda wonder what is the point of really dark hagi, when you can't see the crackles? Still, beautiful cup.

This is a curiosity piece for me. By no means traditional. That's why I was surprised to find it made by 渋谷英一 (Shibuya Eiichi). Your link is a much nicer image. When I saw it first I really wanted to know how the work would look in my hands. I am happy I added it to my Hagi collection.

Nice piece ! I guess this is part of his recents trials with a porcelain/kaolin base instead of traditionnal Hagi stoneware. I think this is an artist who wants to know more remote areas of ceramic than the only tradition of Hagi, so this gives sometimes surprising items.
He had other tests with a type of Raku cooking if I remember correctly : http://www1.lixil.co.jp/gallery/ceramic ... 02197.html

I find Eiichi to be so gifted working in whatever manner he has chosen. I have seen much of it, and am always amazed. This piece I feel is more of an art work on a tea cup, whereas other pieces are tea cups made into art. The darkness of it, creating all negative space, contrasts so remarkably with the shirahagi and biwa glazes I have. I am not sure I will even use it. It may remain a piece I keep out just to look at.
On a side note, Eiichi signs these cups not with a stamp but using a point to write into the clay. I have other cups with this, but mostly I see his stamp. I wonder what decides this? The pattern I see is his traditional work has a stamp, less traditional a written signature.

Oni Hagi guinomi that I use for tea, not sake. There is something rather visceral about these cups, a 'je ne sais quoi' factor in the visual memory.

I had this one a while, and its by the same maker of the mizusashi a few pages back; Takashi Mashita.
