maybe i'm wrong but i think that absorbing 1.9 µSv in your body and organs must be more serious than natural radioactivity !
Paris-New York flight = 80 µSv, ok but is it a radiation on the whole body? i don't think so...

The natural radioactive dose includes radiation from radioactive isotopes which are naturally in your food and in your body so no, it´s not different. The conversion factor Lionel used takes into account that the source of radiation is Cesium rather than say radioactive Potassium or Carbon.

Also the 80 µSv from a Paris-New York flight is distributed through your whole body...it´s from increased exposure to high energy radiation from space. Why wouldn´t you think so?

Natural radioactivity exists in foods too. From wiki "All food sources combined expose a person to around 0.4 mSv = 400 µSv (40 mrem) per year on average". I would not worry about tea yet, those levels are quite small. I wonder how it will change with time, will it be washed away from tea farms or not?

I hope it won't increase, as TEPCO finally admitted that from beginning everything went by worst case scenario. 3 reactors had meltdown during first days, they have little to no control over the situation. Only one thing didn't happen yet, fuel didn't melt through last piece of concrete. I only can hope that at least this is true.

I agree with you Entropye and Xell...
I have found references close from the figures you give Xell : we all ingest 300-400 µSv per year from food, naturally...So why these 1.9 µSv from tea would be unbearable ? It is just 0.5% from the total...

It is like if we were trying to forget all the other sources of radiation we all receive per year when considering this particular question about tea, and even forget all the other sources of pollution and risks for our health...

Looks like radiation has been found in Shizuoka tea.

You can review the published official results here:

We have been discussing the Shizuoka situation here as well: http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15647
This is hitting closer to home for most tea drinkers since Shizuoka is the largest producer of sencha (I believe).

Sorry, I'm sure this has been answered already. What is the status of Uji and Kagoshima tea? Less affected/not affected?

I believe Uji and Kagoshima still have a clean bill of health ...

As well as Ureshino and Yame regions?

Yame and Ureshino are about as far away as you can get from Fukushima.

Molto, ma molto bene! :D
Very good. That's great from Hibiki-an and I think Ippodo send something similar if you buy from them. Teekampagne does it too: pesticide residues and radiation screening. Great. I feel I can buy from them with confidence.

They are testing for Iodine and Cesium, I don't see either of those listed on this form...

This certificate does seem a little odd. It refers to "green tea" without specifying which ones. And testing for "radiation level" is much more vague than testing for the presence of particular isotopes. Perhaps if we saw the certificate in the original Japanese it would make more sense. It could be just a case of something getting lost in translation, or "dumbed down" for those of us (myself included) who are not radiation scientists. At any rate, I have confidence in teas from Uji (as well as Kagoshima), so I would guess that the basic message of this certificate is correct.
